Tiger 1050 Sport is another bike worth a look. Again it looks like they cope with big miles.

Hopefully the rain will hold of tomorrow,v there is a BMW dealer not 10 mins firm the office (happy)

They seem to have good levels of stock, hopefully they will have a couple demo bikes.

There's literally too much choice. I'm looking the look of almost every bike suggested.

There is too much choice, I agree. So many great bikes out there at the moment. I struggled to choose mine.

Try the R1250R as well, I loved it when I had a few hours on one. BMW sell full luggage for them but it's made by Shad, so just get the Shad and save literally hundreds.

So today I snuck out fit a bit at lunchtime and popped to the local bmw shop.

Had a great chat with an excellent salesman, bit at all pushy and interested to try and find the best bike for me. The two main suggestions where the XR and the GS, being sorery on time i could only choose one for a blast and choose the XR as it's the closest comparison to the versys.

Typically the demo bike has no fuel, he offered to pop and fill up but it would take 10-15 mins of time I didn't have. I joked about giving be a tenner and he went one better and gave me his fuel card.

So a quick guided tour of the controls and we're ready for the off. Guessing from the level of toys this is the Sport SE, the only thing missing from the versys spec was the TFT screen. To be honest, I didn't miss it nor did I need 3/4 of the gadgets on the versys.

Off we go through the village to the petrol station, the dealer put it into Street mode which is more than comfortable. It has the sport seat which places you firmly where BMW want you to sit, it's very comfortable though. The first thing you notice is the engine and exhaust noise, it sounds sporty, something I should have paid more attention to.

After fuelling up I headed out to the lanes, following a diversion I missed a turning. Then I really surprised myself by turning the bike in the mouth of a junction without taking my feet from the pegs. This thing is very agile for a big bike. After getting on the right road I was able to twist the grip a bit and let the big 4 wind up, something it does very happily. Then it dawned on me that I was still in Street mode and dynamic was beconing.

This is the point in the ride where the earlier exhaust note should have prepared me for what happened next. Dynamic was selected, I turned through the junction and had to roll of gently fit a car Infront and was greeted with a glorious exhaust burble. Grinning like a small child I sighted the overtake and pinned it.

FECK!

I was not at all prepared for the reaction from the bike, it shot off down the road like a scolded cat. The quick shifter does a perfect job of sorting the changes and then when you get to a corner the combinate of the brakes and the blipper tear your face off.

All too soon I'm back at the dealers, but with that silly grin on your face that only a back lane blat on a cracking bike can give. Even though the versys was great, this was the bit that was missing.

I've agreed withe the dealer to go back when I have more time and take it out for an afternoon to check out the commuting aspect. But you could say that I'm really impressed.

They're a great bike. I did look at taking one out for a test ride when I was thinking about having just one bike but the local dealer closed down.

Don't think there us such a thing as a bad bike, just different levels of fun.

Let's hope you can find what you want at the price you want.

Very good write Nutz, I’d be really interested in a back to back test between the XR and the Multi if you aren’t doing much tomorrow lunchtime....... (lol)

Not long after I go my Multi I was fuelling up and an older guy pulled up on a new 1000XR, loaded with luggage and could tell he was a seasoned rider. Had a chat and he’d owned a Multi previously. His opinion was the XR was by far the better bike. But he was rather scathing about the Multi which makes me think he either had a bad run with his or just wasn’t the bike for him.

Here’s a bit more of a balanced view, and I think the financial aspect alone for servicings (as Duke already pointed out) is a big point.

The biggest thing that kept me from buying the XR was vibration, the tingly kind which sends finger's and toes numb. BMW have tried to find a cure so I hope the one that you ride doesn't do it.
It's a mind blowing bike.

Strangely the GT vibrates, a lot at low revs because of the large v twin but has never caused any numbness even after a 400 mile day in the saddle.

I guess the XR has the same engine as Frankies R?

I believe you're right, Cookie.

There was an XR at Portimao when I went, the guy was flying on the straights - couldn't see what he was like in the corners as in different groups

It is exactly that, no change in tune either.

Kawasaki did a lot of work on both the 650 and the 1000 to cure vibration issues. It's worked so I guess the other bike markers could or have done the same.

Same engine as mine your correct and i kid you not, giving the size of the XR in comparison to the R, you would be hard pushed to see any performance difference on its kick, not hauled it around a track, but from the use i had of it on the road, i dont think it would embarrass itself lol

I was seriously thinking about one myself, however after this years trip into Europe and the way I had my luggage, the R did the job well, so my thoughts have gone away from that for the moment.

Oh yeah here is a link for you, worth a look.....https://stvmotorcycles.co.uk/product/du ... ltistrada/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ...He has some nice stock in at the moment

At the moment I think I would put the beema ahead of the Duke. The Duke and the kwak are both stunning bikes, but neither gave me that feeling... You know the one, that one that gives you a naughty little grin and makes you feel like s kid again..

Barely run in, heated grips and a top box.

That windsail screen would have to go though. Get a DB instead.
