Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
Much would depend on how many are built i suspect.
I have never heard of any Desmos being stolen. The only market really for a stolen one is a collector who doesn't want to ride it.
That said you would never put it past a chancer to steal it and wreck it just for the joy of riding it once.

Most crimes aren't reported in the press.

I imagine it would be extremely difficult to move on as those with the money to buy and own one would never deal with thieving scum.
Also first time it goes for an mot or service its going to get flagged up if stolen.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
I think you're being naive. They don't stay in the country for a start and a large % of people with cash didn't get it through legal means.
Even if someone was stupid enough to take a stolen motorbike for an MOT they would get a dodgy one. But really how stupid would you have to be to be riding around on a stolen motorbike with the original licence plate?
There are loads of online articles about expensive cars and bikes being nicked. They normally break into the house and threaten the family to hand over the keys.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
No comparison IMO.
Mass produced luxury car theft is common because there easy to ring and fetch good money.
Trying ringing a limited edition piece of exotic and its completely different. Like duke says never heard of a desmosedici being stolen and ringed. There's hardly a glut of spare chassis numbers to use in the ringing process. Same with cars, never heard of McLaren f1's being ringed.
Your comparing apples with pineapples.
Luxury car theft is easy and big business. Moving exotic limited edition vehicles is not impossible but very very rare and hardly heard off.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
Right ???? Wow what's that about ?
As I say its rare but not impossible for exotic machines to be stolen, but its is very rare.
The journalists listed rare bike stolen in that article but apart from the MV there all mass produced. A fireblade, a zx10, a Harley and a KTM 690 none are rare never mind exotic. Regular bike theft which are easy to ring or break up and sell as spares.

Its worth £12000 its hardly exotic or high end crime.D6 wrote:And this

Show me an article with an NR750, Desmosedici or Superleggra stolen and I'll agree but just because the press sensationly spin something to sound rare doesn't mean it is.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
It depends what your definition of rare is. The fireblade was one of 20 made. The kwak a full race bike. The Harley a custom.
Most owners of the really expensive stuff have more than a ground anchor for security. You'll need a pretty good system in place. That's all I'm saying. I was trying to help. Clearly you didn't like what I said.

I was just joking. I only looked at the pic, and thought it was a shitty scooter, probably worth a fiver.

Not at all I just don't agree. TBH you starting your thread "Right" just seemed argumentative and not needed me. If i have that wrong my bad but ive done nothing but express my opinion repsectfully tbh.
20 fire blades ??? Its the biggest selling machine on the planet with an £800 paint job hardly special or rare IMO. Would be very easy to break up and sell the engine, wheels, frame, suspension etc... Second hand. Try shifting an engine from a NR750 and its a completely different story. I'm more than happy to disagree and respect your opinion.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
But you're making out that either these expensive vehicles don't get nicked or if they do they are ringed and used on the roads. They're not. They're classed as works of art to some. You can't show off the Mona Lisa if you nick it, but someone would buy it.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
Some good info on the desmosedici thefts thanks for posting. However leaving it on your drive you deserve to have it nicked IMO (joke) and the last one is implied to possibly be fraud.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen, and never have, I've just said IMO its rare and not a significant threat like some more common types of vehicle theft / crime.
Thanks for the info though it has made me think about ownership of exotic bikes especially when insurance quotes are completely crazy at over £7000.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
Well As I've not been around much I'll try and drag this thread kicking and screaming back on topic
IF I had the money to spare I would probably go for the RSV4, but I very much doubt I would buy another litre sports bike. I've ticked the box now, and 130bhp is plenty enough for the road 200+ is too much IMO.
The thing I do think is a shame though, whether you like the individual bikes or not, a bike is made for riding and most of the models listed will be bought by people with far too much money who just want to make some more and will never ride them. A life in an air tight wrapper is no life for a high performance motorcycle.

I can't say I care. I understand your point but you're talking about bikes I'll never get near and will never own. If I was being deprived of one and was going to use then yeah, I would be pissed off.

Re: Which new litre+ bike would you have?
Out of all the bikes above the RCV is the only one that will potentially be stored in collection IMO. Even then only by a few. If I own one it will definitely be ridden and would be a crime not to that is what it was built. You only have to watch some classic racing to see wealthy collectors using their exotic machinery at full chat.
There are plenty of rsv4, panigale, s1000rr owners who use there bikes on the road and I think the same can be said of the h2r.
