Should be, you would be surprised how many bush fires are started by people tossing butts out the window of cars.

Use a vape.

Not good kiwi but sounds like you will be ok and I've got my fingers crossed that you are.

Regards the Sydney fireworks. Would cancelling them be anything more than a good will / political gesture? I imagine the money has already been spent at this late stage so the comments in the media to redirect the funding to fire fighting would seem unlikely. I would imagine you also have to consider the effect on tourism too, as if you cancel at this late stage people will A, be very unhappy and B, it could effect future tourism to the city with Sydney being world famous for its fireworks welcoming in the new year. You also have to consider a lot of people may have made a one of trip, of a life time to be in Sydney for the new year and to cancel for no actual benefit may not be the best course of action.

I guess your dammed if you do and dammed if you dont.

Jeez Kiwi not good news. All I can say is I hope it misses you. You must be at your wits end at work. I was talking to my mate who lives in Oz a few days ago about all this and we were saying in Britain we get severe flooding and you gets get the complete opposite. Strange how the world works. I got my fingers crossed for you bud, but unfortunately it doesn't help for the poor guys who's already been massive affected by it.

And still burning hard into 2020.

The area I lived in the late 90’s when posted in Oz with the Air Force (NSW South Coast) has been pounded in the last few days. There is thousands of people stranded on beaches as everywhere else is on fire. The navy has been brought in to start evacuations by sea.

900 homes have been lost and at least 12 lives with many more unaccounted for. F**king heartbreaking start to 2020.

I thought it got pretty bad in my area a few weeks back but what down south is going through makes our episode look like a walk in the park. ;(

The beach people have been on UK news for a day or two now and coverage of the fires has been pretty good over here.

I just hope the rains come soon and at least calms it all down.

I have an uncle who has a smallholding outside adelaide where the fires are getting close to now. He's really remote so always worrying.

Are you still in danger or has it burnt through where you are now?

Strikes me that Australia is becoming a very difficult place to live.

Aside from the fires, those temperatures are not good for human habitation. And the smoke alone must make breathing difficult.

This is a map of current fires.

I read yesterday that climate change cannot be manmade. because it was God, not man who made the Earth, so any changes to the climate is God's work

It also stated that increases in CO2 is a good thing because plants need CO2 as food, so we're actually helping the planet.

I read D41s comment are purely sarcastic.. I hope that's the case haha

I don't understand why more trees aren't being planted thought. There should be a law surrounding industrial estates and production sites too. They must be individually carbon neutral by way of trees. Environment and animal environment enriching in one swoop. It would also help reduce noise pollution

Twitter. It was mixed in with a pro-Brexit thread. The entire thread was highly entertaining, regardless of your thoughts on the B word. But I don't want to be told off for mentioning it so I'll leave it at that.

I tend to think the effect humans have on climate-change is considerably less than is often portrayed in the media.
And all the hybrid car-driving, soy-bean latte-drinking, recycled-plastic-bag-toting, Greenpeace-loving eco-Nazis in the world aren't really making a jot of difference in the grand scheme of things.
But at least I'm not cynical about them, the preachy buggers.

Kiwi is there any foreign aid/ support being offered?

Specialist equipment like fire fighting planes would be very useful.
