So I'm going to chip in with a different point of view to the others I've seen...
My kids both went to a local school (just over a mile from home)
Both were under 9yrs old
There were two busy roads to cross on the way.
I took them in the car most days.
Why? Because dropping then off at 835am meant I could get to my work for about 9:30. The alternative would be to walk back home (20-25 mins) & get in the car. In all I estimate it would add about 40mins to my work journy so I'd arrive at 10:10 or later.
My wife had a job too, but started at 7:00am so she could be back by 5:00 to collect them from the child minder.
It ain't always as simple as berating mums in 4x4s...
