Recommendations and where to get them from?

I want to have a play around with a couple of different sizes at the rear.

AFAM are very good.. not found a better place than eBay for them. That's what I have on the rear (aluminium lasts as long as steel) and I'll be getting more later in the year

Got my Afam sprockets from Sportsbikeshop via eBay.

Tbh I actually went with afam chain and sprockets on your advice Kwacky. Seem good kit which im happy with.

I'm happy to stick with Afam as they've been very good but I'm always open to other suggestions.

I have had Renthal and Afam Hard Anodised alloy sprockets that have worn very well. The Talon sprocket that came as OEM fitment on my Dymag's was not Hard anodised and it wore out very quickly. Obviously not a fair comparison between manufacturers but does highlight that if your going for alloy sprockets on the road definitely opt for the Hard anodised option.

TBH a sprocket is pretty much a sprocket and all branded ones are very similar in quality. I think where things can differ between manufacturers is in the chain quality and technology.

Talking of Talon, Rocket.. my mate had these on a 125 supermoto and they didn't last long at all. I'm not sure if they make them differently for supermoto/superbikes but it did put me off them

Tbh Cav it probably wasn't because they were made by Talon. Most branded sprockets are made from 7075 T6 Alloy and obviously no difference in design, so if your comparing like for like there is very little in it.

Where things fall down in comparisons is people don't often compare like for like. For example a sprocket will wear out quicker if the width and therefore the load bearing area is dramatically reduced. A 520 sprocket will wear out much much quicker than a 530 sprocket and as mentioned earlier if not hard anodised the wear rate will be accelerated. Perhaps one mate had HA 530 sprocket from Renthal and the other mate had a 520 non hard anodised sprocket from Talon and then unfairly claimed Talon were crap. Just a suggestion I obviously don't know the specifics but the above is a very common mistake.

If your looking at a HA Alloy sprocket imo they are all pretty much the same.

This is something I overlooked in fairness.. My bike runs a 520 chain which is the same as the 125 2 stroke yet I get significantly better mileage from my chain and sprockets (despite the 100bhp power gap)

My AFAM sprocket is 7076 (i believe) T6 hard anodised and I honestly can't tell the difference in wear between steel and these - I am aware that unlike steel which has a very linear wear rate, once the HA has worn away they will wear extremely fast

Cav if you go on the manufacturers websites if your interested you can get all the technical info on chains.

One thing I noticed was the very top spec 520 race chain had a higher tensile strength than some of the lower spec 530 road chains from the same manufacturer so as you say possible to get similar wear on a 520 if you go for the very top spec.

I'd never bothered to look at that in fairness.. I used to use O-ring chains but found they were crap so bought an XW ring chain and 2 years later it's still like new, I don't think there's a single seized link

I'll stick with a steel front sprocket though, that must take more abuse that the rear sprocket and it's smaller and sprung mass as opposed to the rear which is unsprung therefore the mass has a bigger effect

hard anodising is more than a surface coating it fills the the pores in the aluminium so should wear down consistently

From stuff I've done in materials and the in-house anodising we do I always thought it was pretty much just a surface coating
