Performance Driving

Post by Blade »

Anybody got any tips or advice on performance car driving ?

I did IAM years ago but looking more at performance skills training than advanced road driving ;)

Turn traction control off and boot it. Works for me :)

Seriously though, I've done some driving days at brands hatch and silverstone, some in bmws and lotus Elise's. I also did a skidpan training day which taught me loads about car control.

Skid pan training would be very good.

Car track days I've done quite a few but found it very dull after riding a bike on track. It does teach the limits of grip and braking though

What car is it?

If you're half about on a bike then you should be able to put what you know to good practice in a RWD car..

FWD requires a different style and same with AWD. The main thing for me is being in the right gear and carrying the corner speed (I drive a 1.4 Fiesta). If the back end starts skipping a little then I know I'm there or there abouts.

It's satisfying when you get all four tyres squeeling too!!

Cheers Perks appreciate the link. Looks good but seems more track focused and aimed at getting competitive lap times. I think I would prefer skid pan / drift training and fast road driving.

These seem to offer a range of courses

I also spotted a skid pan place in Norfolk but that could be a bit far from you.

There's a skid pan day at Elvington airfield on trackdays.co.uk. They use a BMW for it too!

http://www.trackdays.co.uk/driving-experience/drifting/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - £69 for half a day drifting looks like a real bargain to me.
