I know a few of you have or are looking to swap your air filters.

I had an Astra GTE many moons ago and K&N used my car to develop the induction kit for this particular model of car. Spent the day at the factory and have to say there testing and facilities available were very impressive.

Glad this has popped up actually! I have a K&N filter but they say it's good for ALOT of miles...is this REALLY true or do you still buy a new one every few years to keep it fresh??

I had a K&N on mine when I bought it. It did over 20,000 miles when I changed it and I would clean it at every service (maximum 4,000 miles but after every trackday and 1,000 miles otherwise). It wouldn't clean after a while so I replaced it with a BMC and it felt much better through the midrange and would redline easier

Rossgo get a service kit and just clean and oil it at every service or earlier if you think it needs it.

Cheers guys. Ive never had a non standard air filter so was a bit of unknown area for me to be honest!

Blade thanks for the link thought I have seen something like this but wasn't sure to be honest, I kinder thought it just needed a blow out or was like a Dyson eg wash out!!

BSD recommend BMC airfilters and they dyno a huge amount of bikes

The main thing I prefer with the BMC over the K&N is the way in which it is seated in the Air Filter box..

The K&N is a hard plastic which doesn't seem to be well toleranced.

The BMC filter is a soft plastic (rubber-like) material which seems to make a seal meaning that you should get less stuff bypassing the filter as well as a better seal on the airbox meaning RAM air should be more effective

It must be application specific Cav as my K&N was the soft rubber type you mention your BMC is.

Oh right.. odd. I bought my K&N through SP Engineering so would imagine it's a genuine one.

Maybe your version is newer or something

BMC use a soft moulded seal with no joint ,I had a K&N on my old RC8 and it was rigid plastic
I have mainly changed to an aftermarket filter so I can clean it and reoil it myself,the ZX10 ram air intake seems to clog the filter up very quickly

Fwiw I use a BMC in mine.
I got given it by a lad who used to race the 675s & was giving it up. It was their spare & was never used
I brought a Cleaning & Oiling kit for it & swapped it for my OEM one (that was due anyway) so it cost me nothing.
The baffled MWR one is reputed to be the optimum choice in our 675s, but I seem to recall one of our highly knowledgeable members explaining that the OE ones were used by many race teams, as they actually offered the best performance if replaced regularly.?

A good tuner will agree that a stock filter is the best filter you can run. There's a video showing Marcel Irnie dyno his S1000RR and he got a substantial amount more power with the stock filter than a race one.

He got over 190bhp on his old machine (193bhp i think) but couldn't get in the 190s with the race filter

What was the bhp gain before/after?

Numbers are pretty meaningless unless tested back to back

And totally irrelevant unless tested on the same machine, altitude, temperature, time of day, etc, etc, etc

I put a decat pipe, race can and power commander on my zx10r.

I can confirm it was fast as fook before the work and is still fast as fook now

I think BSD do a before and after run for comparisons.

You're looking at around 8bhp increase but it's more about the power delivery.
