Germany trip photos

Post by duke63 »

A few photos from last week's trip to Germany.

We were lucky in that the sun shone for much of the week and the only rain we had that required waterproofs was on the France/ Germany border on the motorway on the way back and within an hour we were sweltering again.

Trouble with riding on Europe's roads is that it makes you want to go back straight away. The roads are good, there is little traffic and what drivers there are are far more courteous than in Britain ( no lane hogging). Most cars give you lots of room to pass.

The food is good and generally the weather is warmer and drier and the service stations in France are far superior to the crap we have here.

Oh and French women..... (devil)

Anyway here is a few photos.

First night was spent near Ypres in Belgium. Went to the same spot last year but you cannot fail to be moved and humbled by the cemeteries at each visit.

This is the hotel we stayed at in the Black Forest, Germany. Hotel was very good and the food and beer was excellent. Dale exhausted the hotel's whisky supply. The ride down there is very monotous though. 400 miles of motorway riding. We set off at 10am and reached the hotel around 7pm.

First day was spent in the northern part of the B500 up towards Baden Baden. Police presence was very heavy and some of us got a friendly talking too from them. If you look close to Blade's bike, you might see some chalk marks going underneath. It would seem there was a serious accident here a day or two before. A rider must have come down the hill, thought he might not make the corner, panicked and came off about 100 yards up the hill, through the layby and out the other side into trees about 50 ft below. Scary stuff.

Last day in Germany, we attempted the trip we started the day before. Found some stunning roads and an absolutely beautiful spot for lunch. Rode down the mountain the other side on a road that is occasionally used for a hill climb. This was a very hot day but possibly some of the mots stunning roads i have ever ridden anywhere.

Next day we headed back towards the Chunnell. Again motorway miles but this time heading for a small hamlet called Martinpuich on the Somme. As Reims was enroute, we stopped off at the old pit garages. These were once the pit lane for the French Grand Prix and the likes of Fangio, Nuvolari, Jim Clark, Jack Brabham and Graham Hill raced and won here. Its now just beside the ordinary highway but is kept like this by a group of local enthusiasts.

Last stop was in Martinpuich on the Somme. Quite beautiful countryside and so quiet and peaceful. And a cemetery every 5 minutes down the road.

I only found when we got back that the Thiepval memorial is just 5 minutes down the road. Definitely a place to revisit and tour properly one day.

Video of the ride into Martinpuich on the Somme. Notice how many WW1 cemeteries we pass in just a few miles.
