Are they posting links that they hope you will follow and use some malicous code to then fleece you some how?

Clicks = cash

Some of them look to exploit weaknesses so they can use the server

Some search engines use the number of links a site has as part of their ranking algoritm, the more links you have the more popular your site and therefore more useful to someone searching. This technique however is outdated, so the most annoying thing is that all these spam bots are doing nothing to increase a sites ranking.
