I go through the gears without using the clutch, knocking the shifter up from 2nd to 6th and use the clutch to come down the gears.
How do you shift?
Does anyone use the race method of shifting (knocking the shifter down to go up the gears) and why?

Re: Gear Shifting
I tend to use the clutch all the time, but that's more out of habit than anything else.
I've never tried race shift pattern.

Re: Gear Shifting
I always do clutchless upshifts on track, but use the clutch when downshifting (feathering it slightly as a manual alternative to the slipper clutch that I don't have).
I (almost) always use the clutch on all changes when road riding.

Re: Gear Shifting
I have always used clutchless shifting 2nd to 6th, low speed and going down the box I use the clutch. On the road or track.
At Snetterton, I used the gixer for the 1st time, it was set up in race mode, I could not get on with it at all!!!! trying to get my braking right and everything else was bad enough, but trying to remember which way to go with the gear selection was a nightmare... it was like when you pat your head and rub your tummy for the first time, after a while things go pete tong!!! Well they did, I went hammering into Montreal in the wrong gear and could not slow down!!!
So I changed it around and got back to road set up so much more fun, I suppose you get used to things the way they are, been riding that way for so long it is just a major habit and hard to brake.

If you remember; That time we were at Cadwell together, that was exactly the undoing of that "Rocket" bloke. Last heard of in the back of an ambulance heading for hospital & never ridden a bike again apparently.Frankie wrote:...At Snetterton, I used the gixer for the 1st time, it was set up in race mode, I could not get on with it at all!!!! .....
I'm not too tempted, although I believe Deegee did say that it makes it far better for mid corner upshifts & therefore faster laptimes.

Re: Gear Shifting
I've never tried race pattern and TBH I recon I would probably do bad things to the engine and gear box if I did.
I tend to clutchless shift 2nd to 5th, 6th always seems to give a false neutral if I try it. If I'm riding in a spirited fashion I do sometimes clutchless shift down the box, but the bike has to be perfectly setup for it to work well any slack on the chain and it doesn't work..

Re: Gear Shifting
I raced Superlites in my early 20's back in NZ. The one I bought had race shift pattern and i thought might as well try this out. Was all OK till I stopped thinking about it and changed down instead of up coming out of a corner and stacked it, picked it up joined back in the race and 2 laps later did the exact same thing. Straight into the pits to re-configure it back, never to be tried again.
The whole theory on it as far as I'm aware, is when you're hanging off the right hand side mid corner and and need to change up, it's much easier to tap the gear lever down rather than hook your foot under. I'm not that good that'll make a difference

Re: Gear Shifting
Its also supposed to help on left handers as you don't have to try and get your boot between the peg and the tarmac.
