Broadband ... What to do ??

Post by Spudda »

Since moving house in December 2019 I had Virgin broadband fitted with 100mbps download speed but its not without its issues and I will be looking to swap when the contract is up .... when it works its great but its more hit and miss
Virgin website states theirs nothing wrong in the area but I'm only getting between 2 and 3mbps download
Brand new cable in to the house, router rebooted, router reset, the router is turned off every night
At first I thought it maybe more and more people where working from home and maybe that was draining the servers but my other half lives in Castle Brom (Birmingham) and she has no issues what so ever with the same provider

Not sure what to do and which provider to switch to but its bugging me now :^

Problem is that UK cabling is in a shocking state. Its one of the worst in Europe because its run by a commercial company, Openreach.

My mum has been having issues for the last 6 weeks (BT) and 4 engineers have been out and failed to fix it. They do the bare miniumum each time.

Don't do that Spud, that might be your problem. I'll let Cookie or Nutz explain as I don't know my arse from my DNS.

I'm with Monty....don't turn the router off. I don't know if it's causing the problem, but it's not helping. When I help my mate install PCs in offices, we always try to hide the router for that very same reason.....people will turn them off when they're done for the day, then they wonder why they don't work when they get into work the next day.

Yep. Leave it all on. The router usually tries to adjust constantly.

It does however sound like you have a cabling fault. I'd go back to VM and say it's broken and you'd like an engineer.
