Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
Copied from Internet.
This seems to have been more confusing that it was intended. So a quick explanation.. the V4 motor takes at least 2.5 hours after running at full temperature for the oil sight glass to give an accurate level reading, so we leave the bike to settle while the service is complete and customer has his coffee or takes a demo bike for a ride and we carry out the other service items, then check the level. If it's OK then we remove the oil, which can take an hour to drain fully. then replace it with the same amount (in kgs, so we are not comparing volumes of warm vs cold and not pouring hot oil about in measuring jugs). Then run the bike to temperature and we know the level is correct. it's the simplest and safest way to know without waiting another 2.5 hours. Ducati suggest this procedure to ensure the bike isn't over filled and all dealers will be doing this. We thought it would be interesting to see.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
The engine runs scavenger oil pump apparently which means the oil takes an age to flow back into the sump once the engine is stopped.
They weigh the oil to refill to ensure the correct amount is put back in so they don't need to wait another 2.5 hours. I guess it has much to do with this being a 200+ Bhp Superbike. They are becoming more and more like a race engine its associated running costs.

Sounds more like a wallet-emptying procedure than anything else...

What do they charge for a service in a Ducati dealer for one? If they are leaving the bike for periods to cool or settle i'd be interested to see what they actually charge for as the bike sitting in the corner at times shouldnt be charged for really, it's just different scheduling of the technicians day.

The info came from the Motorapido FB page and the say its how they prepare the race bikes already. We are heading for superbikes being exactly like supercars. Very expensive toys.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
1.6 hours service time according to Motorapido.
The theory is that since the engine is difficult to drain, then putting back in EXACTLY what came out, ensures the level is correct. No overfilling because it didn't all drain out.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
Similar if not the same labour charge as a Pani v2 to be fair.
Like Duke says superbikes are becoming like race bike exotica.
The even more special BMW HP4 is a new engine at 5000km. Not an engine rebuild an actual brand new engine at the special price of £12000 instead of the normal £17000

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
It's a sensible procedure with customer focus and cost savings implemented is how I read it.
I don't see any charge for the waiting time and the Technicians are focused on getting the level 100% accurate and correct.
Seems fair and reasonable imo.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
Its quite logical to only put back in what came out really.
A couple of years ago when i did an oil change on the 748, Rick at JHP advised me to turn the back wheel by hand a few times once i thought all the oil had dripped out as it can get trapped in the various bits of the crank set up. Amazing what simple things you can learn.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
Ducati dealers here have a book/chart they go by for service stuff (all dealers here work this way).....say there's a 1.5 hour charge for an oil change, then that's all they can charge...doesn't matter how long it takes them to do it....that part is on them.
The B.A.R. (Bureau of Automotive Repair) usually puts out the guide right as a vehicle is launched (they get a few early samples to bugger about with & test)...and after a year or so there's a few revisions made for stuff that's 'problematic'.

an engine over time will burn oil. so you get less and less oil each service ??

They check the oil level before draining it to ensure it’s at the correct level.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
They weigh it and put the same amount back in only if the level is correct.
If it's not correct and reading low they will add more in a controlled maner until the correct level is reached. If it was reading HI instead of low it was over filled before they touched it.
The risk their mitigating is over filling not underfilling.
Makes perfect sense and is good practice on any engine that runs scavenge return.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
I had to pop up to Cornerspeed yesterday to have the oil cooler replaced. was talking to Neil, the owner about the V4.
He reckons the tech is getting very close to WSBk and Motogp in this engine. There are 3 scavenger oil pumps and only one main oil pump and the crank is counter rotating, all as per the Motogp bikes.

Re: Oil change procedure on Panigale V4
Bugatti Veyron 8 litre quad turbo charged engine makes 1000 bhp.
1.1 litre naturally aspirated Ducati V4 makes 211bhp and even more with Akra pipe.
Modern superbikes are now truly exotic, highly tuned specialist vehicles and unfortunately the costs and maintenance schedules reflect that.
Saying that imo the service schedule Ducati propose for the v4 is very cost sensitive and amazing value to be fair. Imagine if you had to pay supercar maintenance bills
