Mike Edwards Track Instruction

Found this information the other day and thought I would share on here as I know a few slappers have discussed Track riding instruction previously.

Hope the info is useful and I believe Mike Edwards is a very good instructor and not just a quick rider of which there is a big difference.

I did have a chat with him not long after i broke my wrist at Mallory.

Personally i think a day with Mike as instructor would be money better spent than a track course or CSS school. It wasn't cheap but then the best never is.

I just had a look at the email conversation we had. Its two years ago now but he quoted £350 plus cost of his trackday plus expenses which varied from £100 - £300 depending on which track you used. Oulton, Cadwell and Donington were the cheapest.

As i said its not cheap but he did explain he has more than one way of teaching as no two riders are the same. I suspect anyone would learn a lot from him in one day. And if you compare that to the CSS school it works out good value.

It is one and one I suppose and you do get to work on you rather than following a set path as they do with CSS.

I know CSS is very good but it does seem very rigid.

The Simon Crafar book and video taught things that are very different (and the opposite at times) to CSS.

Again i guess there is more than one way of going fast.

So £450 to £650 for one to one instruction with Mr Edwards.

I have no doubt it is very good instruction and your riding would improve but beyond my budget and if I'm honest I reckon you need to be a racer or very serious TD rider to get any value from that outlay personally.

Its why i didn't do it, Blade, i didn't ride on track often enough. TBH i can't see me doing much in the way of track riding again. I may sell the trackbike in the early part of next year.

To make use of whatever is learned you need to be doing trackdays regularly and i have neither the money, time or inclination to do that.

Totally agree Duke. Its only a good investment if you can justify the return.

i know mike. depending on what track you want to do it at (his travel/hotel expenses), his tuition fee, the cost of the track day (x2), and other usual track day personal expenses, you will need nearer £1000.

I guess like most things in life you get what you pay for, and quality costs but a £1000 is some serious wonga, personally I would rather spend the money on 10 track days, get some free instruction and progress that way having a lot of fun in the process (y)

Still cheaper than falling off and breaking bones though, Blade, as we both well know. :(

No instruction in the world will stop us crashing and breaking bones or the motogp boys for that matter. You ride bikes fast at the limit or close to it then you have to accept expense and broken bones are always just one little mistake away.

Not something that sits well with most of us but its the uncomfortablr truth I'm afraid IMO.

I know my mate who used to do lots of car racing says that the only way to go quicker is to push to the point of crashing and if you are not at that point then you are not going fast enough to win anything.

His motto was the only way to find the limit is to be prepared to crash.

I have heard that before I think from Colin Edwards. I m sure it was Colin who said in Friday free practice he would push to the limit and crash and then once he knew where the limit was he would take one step back and then know how far he could push in qualifying and the race.

They also reckon that's the difference between racers and winners. The winners are prepared to crash and will do so. If you're worried about falling off you won't be winning races.
