My boss wanted me to go in tomorrow because he's just clocked I'm away for a couple of days next week. He wants to give me a load of work. I've told him I can't get in until Monday

Monday is late enough to tell him I've not got time to do the stuff he wants me to do 8)

Had an email waiting for me from Sydney Water recruitment when I woke you for night shift today. Wanting to organise a phone call for tomorrow. I hope the Recruitment Business Partner reads her emails early in the morning as I don't want to be awake all day waiting!

Hoping it's good news, but I guess at least tomorrow I'll know one way or another.

Didn’t get the job

F**king gutted. She said the Head of Production shouldn’t have said why he had to me about being the candidate for the job.

I’m suspicious it had something to do with my spinal fusion declared at my medical.

So I was right.

That’s from the manager I was going to be working for.

Ffs. That stinks. I'm guessing it's not a good look to appeal or suggest discrimination?

No it wouldn't be, but maybe a conversation about it would be good. Given that he's been able to work on oil rigs with this medical condition I'm sure he can cope with some on-land work.

Oh mate, that sucks.

I find it strange that they can't discuss any of your medical issues with you..

They've used a third party so it's the third party who can't divulge the information. Kiwi could offer to disclose his medical records direct to his potential employer or have a chat with them about his medical history.

It's going to be really tough, when in your mind you were preparing everything for change.. :S

Perhaps look on the positive Kiwikrasher; you applied for two roles and rapidly became front runner for both.

Balls. Gutted for you.

I do wonder how your surgery would affect you being able to do the job.

Worth fighting for? It is your medical after all so worth pushing the third party to open up permissions and finding out why at least?

That message was from the Area manager who has been championing for me to get the position the whole way through.

The ‘they’ he is referring too is HR recruitment. (This is a state government company) HR had full access to my medical results. The privacy is they couldn’t disclose to the manager the specifics.

I smashed the medical. Topped there cardio test for my age bracket and exceeded all requirements for the physio assessment. The guy that did it wrote the report while I sat there and said I was highly capable of fulfilling the role.

It would only be my spinal history that could have caused a problem. I was far too honest it seems.

When I spoke to HR all they said was “on review of your application as a whole it was decided to go with a different candidate”

I only got the info about a medical issue from the Area manager as he’d had internal company communications when he chased up why I hadn’t got my Letter of offer yet.

My mate has a Development Approval in for new distillery venture, it might work out that I get a redundancy in time to invest in that with him.

We have max 12 months left out here, but could be much less.

My surgery wouldn't have affected my ability to do the job at all. It is far less physical than what I do offshore currently. I have no outstanding issues other than a little loss of sensation in my 4 & 5 finger.

After a bit of reading online, I am going to peruse this further. I actually legally didn't need to disclose my fusion as it would not affect my ability to do the job, and they can't discriminate on my medical history.

I will be ringing HR back on Monday and asking for a copy of my medical assessment report and asking her straight up if my assessment outcome was the reason I wasn't chosen. I know it was, because that's the advice the manager was given. Whether they fess up to that is another story.

Sorry to read this mate, I was going to say what you have mentioned above, your body is under more strain off shore as is it on!
Poor excuses in my opinion, as you say get the report and fight, bring them to task for their discrimination.
