WOW... That must be the ultimate in beyond control & terrifying .
You will have been far too occupied to be bothering with noticing this, but I wonder what those ever circling sharks do when that sort of event occurs..
Do they all head for the rig, in the hope of an impromptu feast, or head for open water away from source of danger.

Being night shift can't really see any fish life unless it's directly under one of the over the side spot lights. And funny enough the 3 big earthquakes I've experienced out here have all been at night, and I've been on shift for 2. Last one was 30 Dec 2021 @ 7.4 Magnitude from a similar area.StMarks wrote: ↑10 Jan 2023, 10:40 WOW... That must be the ultimate in beyond control & terrifying .

Tbh, the shark population out here has drastically diminished in the last few years. Back in 2016 Timor issued fishing licences to Chinese companies and within a year the shark population around our platform was noticeably reduced. From seeing dozens under the lights each night, to barely seeing one or two a day.

As a lot of you would remember, I used to do a lot of scubadiving, and am still a qualified Divemaster, and this absolutely horrifies and disgusts me.

7.9 is the same size as the big San Francisco 'quake of 1906.....it levelled the place
Or 1904, or whenever it was.

Re: What are you doing today ??
Lots of factors go into how destructive an earthquake is. This one was pretty deep, 93 km. Limited land area, mainly sea. There have been report of minor damage in Timor.
I was 48 km away from a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in NZ 1987, depth was only 8 km, the sports field I was on at school had a visible wave pass through it. Everyone standing fell over but there was no major damage to the school. The town at the epicentre, Edgecumbe, was significantly damaged.

Yep.... the shallow ones tend to be the worst in terms of localized surface damage.... which makes perfect sense. A 'roller' sounds like the wave-effect you describe.

At Darwin airport waiting for the 1am flight to Sydney via Melbourne.
Body doesn’t know what it’s up to. The last 32 hours I’ve had 5 hrs sleep in three chunks and only the recent 3 hr bit was in an actual bed. Definitely not going to miss bullsh*t travel after night shifts part of the job. Well, looking forward to not doing night shifts at all!

I just got another 3 hrs broken sleep on the flight to Melbourne. But it’s now morning so I need to try and stay awake till a reasonable hour tonight to start swinging back to days.
I feel like crap for about 3-4 days, the first couple are rough. It’s been getting harder and harder as I get older.

Did a 20-mile cycle ride that took it out of me a little bit more than it used to.
I get the feeling that if I had of pushed a little harder then I'd have been better off. Lazy sod.

Re: What are you doing today ??
MRI on my head at Sheffield's Northern General to check on my little unwelcome lodger in there, hopefully it's doing what it's been doing for the last 24 years (Nothing significant) and chatting to some friends about remapping bikes.
Gaz's H2SX has just been done and was running very lean despite being fully standard, not even a replacement end can on it. It gained a healthy 40bhp peak and plenty of midrange torque... Not that it needed any.
So Sergio now wants his S1000XR doing to help with the midrange vibrations... And I'm looking at the 900XR and thinking I need some help to keep up this year

Re: What are you doing today ??
Well not today, but over the weekend we had a two night get away to a renovated early settlers shack on a creek that feeds into the local river.
Amazing little place in a very private setting (on 26 acres of bush and water frontage) with a wood fire heated outdoor hot tub, wood fired pizza oven, it’s own little wharf, and best of all no mobile or wifi, so time to totally disconnect and enjoy each other’s company.
Other than relaxing in the hot tub and preparing/eating food we managed a canoe paddle down the creek and a good bush walk to a vantage overlooking the property.
Definitely a well enjoyed weekend
Today I’m sitting and waiting for Jess to come out of surgery
