Can anyone recommend a turbo trainer or something similar I can use on the bike? The shit weather and my shoulder injury mean I'm not getting many road miles in and I want to build up my fitness.
Have a look on Facebook/gumtree there are a fair few deals about. I'm sure Perkles would help out finding a good one and getting a good price.

I've got a smart trainer and would recommend getting one over a dumb trainer. They are a bitch though and a lot harder work. If you use something like zwift or rgt then the app adds resistance to the rear wheel as you go up hill.

A colleague uses a Wahoo Kickr and rates it. He said they do a cheaper version called a Kikr Core too. Might be worth checking that out.

Cheers. I did. It's £700.

I might just fill a box with marbles and drop the rear wheel in that :D

The world is definitely spying on everyone.

I'm getting adverts for the Wahoo Kikr having only mentioned it on this page and having it messaged to me on Teams.

I'd agree, but I'm a wimp and the concept of hurtling down a hill at 25+ mph to find a pile of damp leaves doesn't appeal. Riding round here after dark is really dangerous too, narrow unlit lanes combined with drivers too obsessed with getting to and fro work to care if the kill the occasional cyclist....

So many cyclists on my route (the route I shared a while back in a sped up video) which is one of the routes I'm considering for commuting.

I see so many near misses with cyclists on that road and if I'm the one behind the cyclist then I will wait for a long time if necessary. Other drivers will overtake into an oncoming bus and cut the cyclist off. It sickens me.

2 cyclists were hit Sunday morning. One was killed and the other is in a serious way. It happened about a mile away from my house.

I just want to start building up my fitness. I'm really unfit. My shoulder injury massively limits what I can do. Riding on the road jolts the shoulder, inflames the pain and makes me want to go home. The prospect of taking a new bike out, after work, in the dark, on wet leaf strewn roads, when I'm struggling to do a decent speed, does not fill me with joy.

Winter is coming up and I've got a bike in the garage. Some sort of indoor trainer to build up my fitness so I'm not like a whale on two wheels come springtime seems like a good idea to me.

I guess the main question is how much you want to spend.

You can pick up a second hand dumb trainer for under £100. You can cycle on it and you get to choose the resistance. As time goes by you can add power and cadence sensors to work with apps like zwift.

For what looks to be around the £200-300 mark it looks like you could get a smart trainer that has the gubbins to work with apps like zwift.

Zwift costs £12 a month but it makes indoor cycling bearable. But you will sweat like you've never sweated before..

At thus stage I'm not really that fussed about features. I don't need to know how far I've not gone. Time in the saddle is key for now.

Are rollers any good or is a trainer better?

yeah but you've been cycling for over 50 years and think a 30mile ride is a quick warm up.

its nothing to do with that I find keeping up momentum on a turbo really hard work where a spin bike is great fun to use

Rollers feel more natural 'cos the bike isn't fixed in place. There's a bit of a knack to learning them though, but it's not too bad.
