Android 8.0 and Virgin WiFi

Post by Blade »

Need some help from the techies on here (y)

I 've got a Samsung S7 and ever since it updated the software to latest version it keeps dropping my home virgin media Wi-Fi connection on a regular basis. Regular being every few minutes.

It will reconnect straight away if I turn the phone Wi-Fi off and back on again, but drop out randomly and very regular, like every few minutes. No other devices in our home are having this problem, it's just my Samsung S7 phone, since I updated the software.

My phone has a stable connection on my works Wi-Fi and all other Wi-Fi I've tried it's just my home virgin media Wi-Fi that has the connection problem. Therefore I believe the problem is the phone and not the router.

A quick Google search says there are issues with Virgin media Wi-Fi hubs and the S7 when updated of to Android 8.0 but doesn't offer a fix.

I'm due an upgrade in 3 months so just need to get through.

Any advice or suggestions?

I realise it's a clichéd answer but have you turned off the wifi for at least 5 minutes then started up again?

No problems with my old S7 and BT WiFi. Have you tried to set the channels to individual (2.4 & 5 GHz)? You can connect the phone to both and it'll automatically swap between both channels if one drops out

Yep. No power at all for 5 mins.

Cav's suggestion is useful as well. You can change your router settings here: http://192.168.0.1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's only about 3 mouse clicks but I can't remember how to do it for Virgin... 'Wireless Settings' or something like that.

What does the little information bubble say for the "Smart WiFi"?

Also, when you search for a network on your phone, can you see both 2G and 5G? (P.s. you can manually set the SSID for each network to make it easier to tell the difference)

Oh.. UPNP can sometimes cause issues too though I think that's rare with phones, usually a problem when PC gaming

Turn the 5ghz off first and try.

Then if not, change the channel from auto to something like 1 or 12 (top or bottom of the range).

If not turn off ac in the wireless mode. An S7 possibly won't like ac.

I’ve had 3 routers now with dual bands 2.4 & 5 GHz and I’ve always had problems with the 5 ghz band. It’s supposed to handle more load but doesn’t give the coverage. As Coolie suggested turn off the 5 and just try on the 2.4.

Another thing to try is if you have it set to auto IP’s set manual IP for each device.

You still have a TIVO????? They are bricked here in aussie, no guide available anymore and no support. Mine stopped working about 3 yrs ago.

It's not TIVO. It's there latest V6 box. No idea why they call it TIVO.

Turned of the 5ghz. Thanks for the help, I will monitor and feedback if it works.

Cheers guys.

Turned of the 5ghz and it's been stable touch wood (wasntme)

Not sure why the software update killed the 5ghz connection as it worked fine shifting between 2.4ghz and 5ghz for the previous 22 months :?

Just happy it's improved and thank you everyone who contributed. Top skills (rock)
