This is quite pertinent reading.
The older i get the more i realise how are lives are conditioned by Governments to get the most from us at the expense of happiness and contentment.
We spend our lives chasing an impossible dream of being wealthy and happy whilst living in the moment just passes us by.
I'm glad some planners are looking at things with a different perspective,

Reliance on cars should be reduced anyway. There is a greater opportunity to work from home for a lot of office based workers.

Very true. The phrase 'busy fools' jumps to mind a lot. People are busy but what are they actually achieving? A lot of people dont think through their logistics and locations when buying a house, just what the house looks like.duke63 wrote:This is quite pertinent reading.

I do find it odd that a lot of new estates go up and they don't make provision for a corner shop or a pub. It wouldn't take much to put a small retail block in.

In Copenhagen bicycles had their own separate piece of road from cars as they do in some of the Low Countries. It's a good idea and would also help to reduce the obesity problem.StMarks wrote: Bicycles.?

German cities are also full of bikes and integrated cycle lanes and crossings. They are everywhere and what strikes you when you live in Europe and come back to the UK is how little of that we have.duke63 wrote:In Copenhagen bicycles had their own separate piece of road from cars as they do in some of the Low Countries. Re: 'Trapped in car dependency'
Why is it odd, the people building these estates aren't building societies to live in they're just building profit. There are some constraints and concessions from the planners and councils, but they are ridiculously weak. If the planners try and force issues, the developers just say OK we'll do this somewhere else.Kwacky wrote:I do find it odd that a lot of new estates go up and they don't make provision for a corner shop or a pub. On the Battersea power station development site they got planning permission based on supplying several thousand social housing units. They're now half way through the project and that number has been accepted by the planners at less than one hundred.
