One week down...

Post by Itchy »

Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted, you may remember I was going away for a while at the request of Her Majesty.

Well, I'm here in sunny Akrotiri and have been for a just over a week now.
Temperatures haven't dropped below 30 degrees during the day or below 26 at night. I know that doesn't seem like much compared to the heatwave much of Europe has been experiencing, but working on the aircraft it all gets reflected off the concrete and is, well let's call it a medium-spicy heat!

Don't even get me started on the work inside the aircraft! Ever got into a car that's been sat in the sun all day? It's uncomfortable, isn't it?
Now imagine you're in a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft that's been in that car park all day, and within seconds of getting into the cockpit you can see a sheen of moisture all over your body!

Not that I'm complaining, I love it out here. I'm topping up my t-shirt tan that the UK summer blessed me with, I'm getting fed, I only have to share my room with one other bloke, not 3 like many out here do, and it's got air-con in which is a massive blessing.
I've just started doing nights now, which means less of Op Bronze but it does give me more time to get down to the gym, so I'll have to settle for Op Massive instead! With 16 weeks left I'm hoping to make decent progress now that I'm out of physiotherapy and back into my own gym work.

There are downsides, obviously. Away from the family being the main one, and away from the bike being another! But this isn't my first rodeo, we'll get through it.

One thing I've been doing is purposely staying away from the site for a while so that I've got plenty of posts to catch up on, and I can just chip away at. Obviously I won't be participating in the "What did you do to your bike today" thread, but I'm sure I can stick my oar into other things without actually biking. Y'know, like D41 does! :D

That's all for now folks. See you around, I'll be lurking...

Good to see you have some targets and stratigies sorted for making it through. Time away from home is always hard and that’s a long stretch mate.

I for one would be keen on hearing tales from Itchys Holiday!

Itchy hope it's going alright out there. Nice to hear you have got air con in your roo. Clearly it's needed after a hot day!

A fly in the ointment.

Work had to be carried out on the accommodation block I was staying in, so we had to move.
Me and my colleague are now in a 4 man room with two other lads, the room isn't as nice and the air con unit basically pushes warm air around the room.
It isn't ideal, but I've still got a comfy bed (I took it with me), there's still a tv and fridge in the room and the Pizza place will still deliver to the door. So as hardships go, I reckon I'll survive!

I was thinking of this from Full Metal Jacket

"Anyone who runs, is a VC
Anyone who stands still, is a well disciplined VC

Ain't war hell?"

:D

I should've known.

"War is hell" is the line I'm thinking of.....either Sherman or MacArthur. Close enough.

Now I remember why that clip throws me off...!!

The gunny sergeant from FMJ was in the chopper in Apocalypse Now.

I think Americans tend to dwell on the war in Vietnam more than is healthy. Nobody likes to lose, I suppose.
