Jaguar Land Rover

Post by Kwacky »

They've announced that they will be moving production of the Discovery to Slovakia

It could cost jobs in the short term but they say that the UK plants will be used for electric vehicles.

The investment, totaling hundreds of millions of pounds, according to the people, could cut both ways. While some agency-employed plant workers may lose their jobs, the decision to build electric vehicles at Solihull marks a major commitment to U.K. manufacturing amid uncertainty over Brexit. That could prove a shot in the arm for a country that, according to Bank of England Governor Mark Carney, has seen business investment 4 percentage points below what it would’ve been had the country not voted to leave the European Union.

Makes sense to me. Existing production to a cheaper country that is more connected than the UK and niche high skilled work in Brum.

Plus they are edging their bets from Brexit. Expect more of the same from others i think.

I suspect electric vehicles will prove cheap to manufacture in terms of labour compared to internal combustion engines vehicles. There are far less moving parts.

Call me a cynic, but I’ll be surprised if any cars or vehicles are actually destined to be built there until the Brexit chips fall one way or the other.

Something that I suspect will hit us very hard, that no one seems to be mentioning, is that Exports to the EU will presumably hit hard by legislation that we currently rely on to protect us from cheap global imports.: The requirement that there is a maximum of around 45% of components in an EU product that originate from outside the EU.
We are about to be outside the EU.

Give it 20 years and we are more likely to be in a similar state to the one we were in last time we "Opted out of Europe", 383ad
