I see there's a movement to bring them back.

I don't really have an issue with them but it depends what information they store on you. If it's chipped they could track your movements.

One bonus with ID cards is that you won't need a passport when travelling in Europe.........

In principal I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I wouldn't trust the current government with it or my data.

Not in favour , the government f*ck up everything else there is no reason why this would be any different .
A few years ago I needed a copy of my birth certificate , paid applied etc and about 10 days later received a certificate in the post , but the year of my birth is different on it , the original states 65 the copy states 66 , I don't see how they can f*ck that up it's supposed to be a copy but they have and the ID cards will be no different . There will of course be an expansion of government to issue and regulate and collect fines etc , which obviously means more of our tax revenue kept by the government instead of being used for actual public services .

Don't worry, they'll get G4S to deal with it. What could go wrong?

One of the reasons that the photo licence was introduced was to eliminate the need for ID cards as most of the country hold either a provisional or full licence and most information required is contained within the licence anyway.

I agree with ID cards and would happily carry one and it should be mandatory. It should be an offence to not have one. Would make the police's life way easier. Link it into the NHS, passports and driving.

If you are a law abiding citizen you shoud have nothing to worry about. If they want to track me going to the shops or having a shit then good luck to them.

It would then allow the government to sort out exactly who is in the UK, who isn't and who shouldn't be.

Whilst i appreciate captain cockup will likely be in charge of it, i do also believe it should be government only with independent oversight of the data on moral and security grounds.

If you are a citizen of the UK or in the UK on a working Visa etc the status can be updated.

A Government with a history of selling our medical records to private companies should not be trusted with it.

You have a point, it shouldnt be run by the current shower. Maybe an independant body with a fixed legal madate to only use the data for citizen services and no private companies?

Mandatory here in the U.S. if you don't have a license...and to my mind no different to when I just had US Resident status & had to carry a Green Card with me everywhere.
It's not a big deal at all, it really isn't. Don't even give it a second thought TBH.....it's in your wallet with your credit cards & other stuff, and that's pretty much the end of it.

No your not I agree, but if ID was incoporated into the driving licence it would only be a simple rule change to make carrying your licence compulsory and it would be no more of a hardship, in fact it would be one less piece of plastic in your wallet or whatever, and every 10 years your licence and your ID gets updated.

I am not saying I am right, just a suggestion if they were to go down that route of ID cards

Personally I think you should carry your driving licence with you when you're driving/using a vehicle. It's no hardship and it speeds up the police dealing with you at the roadside. At the moment people can blag they're someone else.

It also speeds up the organ donor process should the worst happen, as all that info. is on the card.

I take 3 cards with me when I ride on the road: debit card, credit card as backup and ID (purely for the reason of the worst happening and making the people cleaning up the mess have an "easier" time of it)

I use the EXACT same method mate haha

It’s a hefty fine here if you’re driving/riding without your licence on you.

If you don’t have a licence you can get a Proof of Age Card from the Roads & Transports which looks like a licence but no driving classes. But yet to make them mandatory.
