Did he improvise that entire scene ? I vaguely remember being told that he did .

Not quite. As a former marine drill instructor he was brought in to act as an advisor. During some of the test script runs he was showing them what he would say and how he would say it. Kubrick loved his style so much he made him an actor as well. I think some of the film has snippets of the test runs added to it.

Yep....the stuff he did can't be 'acted' per se...has to come from the gut.

Exactly as I heard it, if it’s urban legend as least it’s consistent.

FMJ wasn't his first acting job....he was in Apocaplyse Now very briefly, Boys In Company C, etc. (Company C is worth a watch, I suppose)

Dale Dye is another Vietnam vet. who's had a good career as an advisor-come-actor.
