Best mortgage I had was a lifetime tracker at 0.19% above boe base rate. Not far of 0% finance mortgage.

The base rate was 0.25% for a long time.

We were lucky with low rates. Good link to historical rates below shows the rate can be alot higher.

Could you imagine the state of the housing market if we saw anything like those interest rates?

They were higher than that in the eighties, but then the mortgage value was also much lower than today.

Considering the panic we see with people when they announce a rise of 0.25% I dread to think what would happen

The banking system would collapse as there would be too much default. Problem for economists is now that there is so much debt in the UK that larger interest rate rises are not an option due to this.

The UK is totally at the mercy of world markets and economics now and couldnt protect itself if it tried. It could devalue the currency but that wouldnt work for long.

When money is cheap and borrowing is easy it's great to prop up an economy, but it damages it's stability and long term prosperity. Great for politicians mind...

The house goes on the market tomorrow.

It's been valued at £10k more than I thought it would be. That gives us some wriggle room as the electrics need upgrading.

We've put a tentative offer in on the other house. We can't make a formal offer as we've not sold our own property but at least we've registered our interest.

I have very mixed emotions about this. I really do like the house we're in.

I think it's a case of see what happens - if it's not meant to be then problems will arise, if you are then it'll happen.

I know what you mean about your current house, you guys are comfy there, but sometimes it's worth a change - plus it will make all of your lives a little easier, once the new one is sorted.

Plus, when you've moved and extended i can come and stay :D

I'm wishing you guys good luck (bear)
