can't hurt to try a few?

I normally use http://www.speedtest.net/ or one or two at random from google to see if they all match up.

That's the one I always use. Don't forget if you're testing it over wireless you'll get differing results depending what you're testing it on and where you are from the router.

It all depends on your service provider, package, and if it's ADSL how far you are from the exchange.

If you are on and ADSL connection it is worth remembering that it is a self-optimising system. That basically means if will reduce you actually connection speed automatically to give you a more stable connections. Sometimes, as I found out last week, this goes a little wrong and it puts a cap on your connection that is too restrictive. I was reduced down to 0.5mbps where as I should be running at over 10mbps. It might be worth a call to your service provider as they can get the cap reset and put the connection back into learning mode.

God I miss my VM broadband!! would have been on 100mb by now as well ;(

I'm lucky if I get 1.3mb on where we are, although BT are supposed to be upgrading the cabinet to fibre this month, which should give us over 10mb with any luck.

This is a bit technical, but might be worth trying...

http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Do the basic test and see how that compares to the previous results, the bt speed tester is used by ISP's when they diagnose issues so it's quite accurate.

When the tests complete there is a button at the bottom "Further Diagnostics", click that and enter your phone number of the ADSL line. When the results are complete you should get 2 bits of key information:

Maximum Speed - This is the speed that your ISP told you that you could get out of your line.
IP Profile for your line is - This number is the maximum speed you "should" be able to get out of your line.

If your download speed is a lot less than the IP Profile value then a reset should help. My IP Profile was 13Mb and my download speed was 0.5Mb, a reset changed my download speed to 9Mb.

Will check when I get home Jon as the missus ran the last test and she won't have a scobby do if I tell he to do all that (giggle)

Great info though, thanks mate.

That's not going to give too much info for you mate, it's designed for people on ADSL, as your on a cable connection you won't have to worry about the autolearning speed cap.

Thanks Bud, tried the BTW checker, apparently the max speed my line will allow is 2 mbps which seems awfully slow to me, the BT's in the wifes name so I'll get her to check the account and upgrade if possible, thanks again :)

It depends on how far you are from the exchange and which adsl package you have. It's worth checking the package as I found out.

I was on plain old adsl, I've recently upgraded to adsl2 and it pretty much doubled my line speed.
