Vast numbers of bluebottle jellyfish have been pushed ashore in Queensland, Australia, stinging thousands of people and forcing the closure of swim spots.

Surf Life Saving Queensland said over 2,600 people received treatment at the weekend. Bluebottle stings are painful but typically not life-threatening.

Unusually strong winds pushed the jellyfish colonies towards beaches.

About 13,000 stings were recorded in the past week - three times more than in the corresponding period last year.

There's some photos of the aftermath kicking around. The bike that gets the bird strike does ok. it is a massive bird.

The second bike is totalled.

It's a real shame, and a 1 in a million "true accident", however..
..wouldn't we all apply the same logic (road rules & track) that the rider behind bears the responsibility for maintaining a safe distance .?

He's on the track. He catches the other guy who is going much slower than the onboard biker. he has to overtake him at some point. To me that looks like a safe place to overtake and he does give him enough room.

Neither rider is at fault IMO.

No-one at fault......no way to predict or plan for every possible situation, and a bird-strike is about as unpredictable & random as it gets.
Rider behind was at a safe distance so as not to 'crowd', but close enough to plan a pass.

Who can afford to go to Australia just for a trackday? I would think the insurance costs must be a fortune.

They are running it like one of their Euro trips, a few days on track and hotel etc, no idea what the costs were. I know one of the blokes arrived and realised a few days before track time started he'd left his key at home and had to get it posted to one of the staff that hadn't left yet. Muppet

Imagine the cost of repatriation if you ended up on a stretcher.

A track day at Phillip Island or Eastern Creek is run buy the same company and is $295 a day at each track.

Australia had a reciprocal agreement with many countries medical systems and NHS is included, so medical attention would be free in the public system.

But a clever man going overseas for a track day would be wise to take out extra travel/medical insurance.

Phillip Island has always been plagued with bird strikes by virtue of it hanging off the bottom of Aussie, it’s a first stop for lots of ocean bird life.

It’s the only track to ride in Victoria. Unlike the UK we have very limited tracks available here in Aussie.
