We were going to go tonight but neither of us could keep our eyes open at 6pm so gave it a miss.

I think we'll be going this weekend instead so will post in here when we do. It's a film which has had people likening it to Saving Private Ryan in terms of prestige

I watched it a couple of weeks ago (it came out on Christmas Day here). I thought it was good, but not great. The long-take approach is clever, but the novelty of it wears off after a while, and it ends up being there for "technical achievement" rather than enhancing the film.
I wouldn't compare it to Saving Private Ryan...the two films are light years apart in scope,.....but "Dunkirk"...yes - it "feels" like the Dunkirk movie.

Personally I believe it shows real stories of the great war and Dunkirk defo had a big green tick from soldiers who were there. It's not all action like how the americans portray war - Saving Private Ryan was and still is a great film but I personally would say Dunkirk and 1917 are on par with films like Battle of Britain, A Bridge too Far and even The Longest Day and to me those are fantastic films.

My great grandad was in the great war, when he came home he had white hair and would be quiet, my mum has told me how they had to sneak around him when they were in the same room as him or when in his house. I could imagine 1917 being fairly accurate to what he saw and experienced, it show trench life with rats and men being buried around them and how the men did what they were told because if they didn't there really was nowhere else to go, how the main character didn't care for medals but instead was doing it for his mates beside him and also at one point in the film he had to turn himself off from what he had experienced and get on with the job in hand.

Personally 10 out of 10. Well worth watching

"It's not all action like how Americans portray war"......??????
You do realise it was a movie about the largest military operation in modern history??
Do yourself a favour and watch it again sometime soon. Aside from the opening scenes, and the closing sequence, there is a LOT of downtime in that movie. There's also a lot of conversations between people who would not normally interact with one another...their hopes, fears, etc. It's a fairly immersive film on that level, but only if you allow it to be.
