Sounds like he had his own plan for summer.
He's going on Saturday as we are too so the house will be empty for a few days - he is being driven to the airport with us.

I'l try a session of 'is everything ok?' again when i get 2 mins with him on his own.

He just hasnt made any effort since i turned up at his place and continues to not do so.

My frustration has turned to bemusement at this point.

If so, then he's needs to get some help rather than go to a foreign country with strange surroundings and magnify his problems.

I've been very open and accommodating / patient, but he has had opportunities (that i have tried to give him) to talk.

Not really very fair to turn up here and start hiding away.

Not an easy situation. If he needs rest then he will get it here, but i will be advising him to get some help if he hasnt already.

He has to WANT help. "Needing help" is something everyone else sees, until he sees it himself then you just keep pointing out the obvious & hope the seed takes root.
And "going somewhere else" is a classic non-starter - he'll be the same no matter where he goes....he's just moving the problem around with him.

Whatever his issues are, going to France won’t solve them. He won’t get any help in their system.

This venting could go on and on... sorry folks.

Hes just had a dig that my dogs have the choice of seats in our lounge and he's not sure they would move so he's going to sit in another room (punch)

I've just told him don't make me choose as you will regret it.

Mrs C stopped me saying anything else. Our nice visitors are going out in the morning so he's getting both barrels, feck it.

My advice having spent the last 9 months looking after someone with a severe mental illness is step back a bit. If he is ill he won't have a clue about why you're pissed at him and all you are doing is winding yourself up. (understandably).

Tell him tonight, it's your last day tomorrow and I'd like to take you out for breakfast. That way he knows he's going home and you get a chance to talk to him properly.

If he is ill calling him out as a cnut just reinforces what he already thinks about himself.

I may be wrong though, he may just be a cnut!

Fwiw I don't.
Sadly I spend a disproportionate amount of my time in environments populated by various "types", and imho on the whole they conform to conventions of activity & habits.
And "Yes,," . : I realise that I'm always quick to deride bigots, & therefore the above statement can be seen to illustrate my innate hypocrisy, but I propose my cynicism to be duly earned.

Tell me about it.

You couldn't make it up. Today he went out to cycle to a town about 10k away and ended up somewhere completely different and did one junction along the equivalent of the M5 (fubar)

He said he wondered why people were honking at him (headbang)

Oh and he left all the lights on downstairs overnight (facepalm)

Sigh......

Hes changed a lot in 12 years (which is the last time I saw him)
