They didn't, they're just portrayed that way in art.
The real Adam & Eve didn't have navels at all...it was a fairly handy way of proving to their kids & grandkids that they were the real deal, that they were created by God himself, and if their offspring gave them any sh!t about "looking weird" then history was about to have it's first case of child abuse.
Then they sat them both down and explained that because Eve had only given birth to boys, they would grow up to be the world's first homos, and to "feckin' deal with it".
True story.
