It finally stopped raining!!!!

Mid 20’s today so got the lawns done and gave the pool a clean, now relaxing with a G&T at the pool

Jess is up seeing her parents so couldn’t escape on the bike, but the road is lousy with coppers atm as the Ferrari club drove through this morning and the cops are having a field day picking them off as they come back down the mountain. Can hear the sirens from here.

Might get out first thing tomorrow (Monday) and everyone else will be heading to work.

Kinda, it’s different in different areas/states but where I am is classed as Temperate, few hours north is sub tropical.

Normally it’s hot as hell right now and not unusual to have 40+ temps. But I’ve been home 5 weeks and the hottest it’s been is 32, on one day. The rest have been low 20’s at most and a few days as low as 16-17 deg. That’s mid winter temps for us.

The last month has been the longest period of constant rain I’ve ever seen since I moved to Aussie. But definitely made me appreciate today!

Just been given a job offer.

Production manager at the second biggest spirits distillery (primarily gin) in Sydney. Owner is an ex refinery process engineer so fully understands my background.

I’ve been offered a salary that is above the roles market value but I’d still be dropping to 45% of my current income.

But on the flip side I’m home every day, no more f**king quarantine and I’d be able to commute on a bike again.

Time to crunch some numbers.

That is a massive salary drop.

If you can afford it and it makes you happier then go for it.

What's the role?

The role sounds ideal for you so if you can make the numbers work then HAPPY DAYS!

FYI, the salary converts exactly with UK salaries for that role. Just a nugget of information for you.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

Initially distiller till I have a good handle on that then trained up into Production Manager as the current guy in that role (my mate who had his own distillery) is moving on into commissioning and running a second site.

Going to crunch numbers this evening, it will be tight even if I can do it, but the thought of not going offshore anymore is very very appealing

I’m looking down the barrel of 3 months quarantine this year

If you can afford to do it and it excites you then do it. So many people just get stuck doing what they do and fearing change. If the industry is in good shape and you can see a future then i would, given what you have said about the oil industry now and the quarantine crap going on.

As with most things, affordability is a factor. Is there any chance they would cut you in on profits if you worked well for them? Might help.

A 55% pay cut is HUGE!!
I always try to work on the principle that if I have to sit down & try to figure out if I can afford something, then I pretty much already know what the answer is going to be.
That's just for me personally though.

Don't you think that perhaps (looking long term) that refined alcohol may have more secure prospects than fossil fuel extraction.?

On top of the improved working situation, presumably job security has to be worth a good percentage of that disparity.

LNG is Australia’s biggest growth market atm, but in the current climate of Covid and restricted travel the companies are all looking to move staff/recruit from the WA or NT as those are the states you fly out from to the gas projects.

My personal long term prospects coming from the eastern states is not looking good and my current field has 2-3 yrs life left.

But another consideration is if I find can survive on 45% of current earnings (I haven’t been the most frugal person since my divorce) another 2-3 yrs offshore would have me mortgage free. But then I worry how that would affect me mentally in the quarantining constantly.

The feeling yesterday that I might only have one trip left offshore was very very appealing.

Ringing the owner today to talk a deal.

That’s exactly what I spent about 4 hours doing last night. Few more areas to crunch but it’s looking very tight. 4 kids and a partner at uni working part time.

had an hour video call with the Distillery owner.

had pretty much made my mind up not to take the job, as when I was crunching my budget, I realised if I could survive on the lower salary amount, and did that on my offshore wages, I could actually be freehold or close to it in 2 yrs. I could then easily take a much lower paying onshore job and still be sitting pretty. And by then Jess will be finished uni and in a full-time RN job.

I explained my position quite honestly at the start. He said he didn't want me to make a decision until he had sent me the details of the package he was putting together. He said he understood and respected my outlook but thinks it won't be as clear cut once I see the package. He has a good knowledge of my industry/process skills as he's an ex refinery Process Engineer. The combination of skills and experience I've picked up along the way, completely ticks all the boxes for him. Tell ya, it feels pretty good to have someone value you and did their best to convince you to work for them.

I know the job value in the industry atm. It would have to be 30-40% over that to sway me now I have my financial plan fixed.

The meeting finished at 10am... it's now 9pm and still yet to see an email. I hope it means he's looking down the sides of the couch for coins (lol)

I'm sure he'll be looking for all the coins and selling a kidney while he's at it.

Definitely nice to feel valued though!
