Detox

Post by Kwacky »

Me and Mrs Kwacky are on Day 1of 9 of a detox plan.

It's horrible. No food to speak of for the first couple of days. You have various supplements, aloe vera gel to drink and a protein shake.

I'm hoping to throw off my spare tyre.

It was a health doctor on a radio show. It said the body doesn't need to detox, and does all that naturally anyway. You should just eat healthy and the right stuff to begin with. Fasting in an effort to detox was not actually a good idea, as your body just thinks you are starving and starts storing fats etc.

No personal experience though.

It's not complete starvation, you have some snacks during the day to keep things ticking over. After the first 2 days you get about 1200 calories.

The human body isn't designed to have 3 meals a day. I don't think a clean out will do me any harm.

We'll see what happens. I'm using this plan because 3 mates have done it and all have seen massive differences.

A guy at work did it and to be fair it worked for him. You could tell he even looked better however when he went back to normal calorie food he put on again!. I can't see why you can't do it though!

Kwacky is it fat or bloat? I've been carrying around a flipping Zeppelin since Christmas. I've actually lost weight but struggling to lace my shoes!

Ultimately the only way to lose weight is to burn up more calories than you take in. That part of it is simple.

But there are many ways to do it, by eating less and/or more exercise. The hard part is to not go back to the old ways of eating what you want.

I did hear the programme that Perkles mentions and the doctor did come across as a bit of a preaching mare and the wind got taken out of her sails a bit when she chided a bloke who said he had lost weight by drinking home made smoothies until he told her he had lost 9 stone to date in this way.

This is a kick start rather than a long term plan.

3kg in what, 3 days?

You must have had some pretty epic toilet time!

Plenty of toilet time, but Number 1s only. No number 2 yesterday.

I suspect the body is burning reserves of energy to keep going, hence the weight drop. I'm still exercising as well so I will be in calorie deficit each day.

You drink shed loads of water to wash your system out. I've not turned yellow so I don't think my kidneys have packed in yet.

Tried Paleo?
I know it's the new buzz but we seem to be seeing some positive trends at home.
I'm dairy intolerant to begin with. We've also tried going gluten free as my eldest has Aspergers and there is a school of thought that a GF diet helps those with Autism (which Aspbergers is now collectively included under ASD). My wife and youngest also showed ceoliac traits and after extensive testing (and exclusive/inclusive diet trials), have been diagnosed as 'gluten sensitive'.

So now we're in the middle of a Paleo trial put together by celebrity chef Pete Evans. This has also coincided with a complete shift in my work, going from a railway flagman mid last year, to basically unemployed, then to working 50+hrs a week for a courier company driving 12T trucks and doing my own load/unload manual labour. Granted, the physical side of work has certainly helped me trim down but the reduced carbohydrates (in favour of protien) has helped reduce bloating and I generally feel better.

I guess we'll see where it leads long term.

In short - no dairy, grains or processed foods. High protein (meat and nuts) and veg. Non processed fats and oils inc animal fats like duck fat and coconut oil. Free range grass fed meats (as most meat is grain fed). No processed foods therefore eliminating processed sugars (some honey and maple syrup is used). Low in fruits as most are high in sugar.
Feemented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi to help stimulate good gut bacteria.

Weigh in this morning. I've lost very little since the last time we weighed ourselves but my wife has lost just under 3kg in 3 days so she's happy.
