The career that you wanted?
Just wondered how many people are actually in the job/career that they wanted to be 'when they grew up'
I had totally different aspirations when I was younger compared to the career I have found myself in.
So what was your desired job against your actual?
RAF pilot - lawyer

Re: The career that you wanted?
I guess??
I always wanted to be a guitar player...and I did OK, I just chose to leave (and am currently considering having another go at it)....then carpet installer for 27 years, which I did enjoy and I do miss....now suddenly I'm doing stand-up comedy, and pros are telling me I'll be professional in a matter of months (I have some good stuff, which I work very hard on).
No regrets.

Re: The career that you wanted?
I wanted to be an RAF pilot too and went a long way into looking at it.
But when i left school there were no jobs anywhere and ended up being an accountant as someone offered me a place at a local firm. My only claim to fame is that Robert Plant also spent a week working at the same place when he left school.

I was in the cadets and used to go to summer camps on RAF bases. I failed the medical and as I had no plan B I went off the rails for a bit.

Re: The career that you wanted?
I wanted to be either RAF or computing, then realised you can't become a pilot if your colourblind, so became the latter.
Then realised that a job gets in the way of living, so found a way out of it again

Re: The career that you wanted?
Age 7 I wanted to be a Level crossing gate man. (I don't know why)
Age 12 I wanted (and became) an engine specialist.
Age 22 I wanted something different.
Age 30 I was working in the crane industry
Age 50 I was Tech Support Engineer for a large German based crane company.
Age 52 I was made redundant and like Cookie have been living rather than working.
Age 54 I'm looking to get back into work having had my year or so out.

Re: The career that you wanted?
As a kid I was fascinated by aircraft (still am) and dreamed of being an RAF pilot, but i was too fat and I've got no hand-eye co-ordination
Tried out Aeronautical Engineering but did more Applied Drinking
Did an Economics degree that I loathed
Fell into employment with Lucas Aerospace so at least I was in the industry and have been through 5 different mergers and takeovers and lots of different roles in purchasing, commercial, market development and logistics and am now a Logistics Manager running 6 different teams with about 30 people working for me.

Re: The career that you wanted?
Really, a pro cyclist??
I'm impressed.....I raced at sport level (intermediates) for years, and even that takes one hell of a commitment to stay in shape....the training regimen, the diet, etc.....my cousin was pro for many years...it took up his whole life.....prolly why his wife left!!

Re: The career that you wanted?
Like others on here, my aspirations changed over time.
As a youngster I always "knew" I was going to be an RAF pilot like my father & his father.
Around Ten I realised that I was simply nowhere clever enough to make that grade..................

Re: The career that you wanted?
Had no idea what I wanted to do, and still don't really...
Tried doing electronic engineering at college, but got pissed off with the electric shocks. Found a computer while on that course and realised that it made some sense to me. Spent the rest of my life from there onwards trying to make sure that work is a means to live and not the other way, since switching to contracting this has become a bit easier. I still can't wait until I don't have to do it any more.

Re: The career that you wanted?
Seems a lot of us wanted to fly in the RAF.
Me too.
If you take out the usual childhood dreams of wanting to be an astronaut/F1 driver/cowboy/James Bond, then I too wanted to be a fighter pilot. However, with vision comparable to Mr Magoo, this was never a realistic option. Still, after dossing around for a few years in various mundane jobs, I ended up joining the RAF anyway.
RAF Pilot - RAF Weapons Technician.

Re: The career that you wanted?
Architect
RNZAF airframe/engines/structures Tech and now Offshore Gas Process Operations Tech.
I did get half way thru my Draughting diploma but ran out of money and took a chance at an ad I saw in the paper for the airforce. Worst paying job I've every had, but the absolute best fun/experience I've had and been paid for it. Offshore is an experience, but very little of it is fun.

A-level grades were a bit shite too, which prolly didn't help.
Did they give people this much crap during WWII?? "Hi, I want to be a tailgunner!!"..."Sorry mate, there's a bit of a wait for that"....not fricking likely.

Re: The career that you wanted?
Bomber crews didn't last that long, so you knew you would get in sooner or later.
