I hate cigarettes as well. But that is just ridiculous. No one forced him to smoke them. He chose to do so. Its not like the risk was a big secret.

I can see that decision being reversed. There's too much money and lobbying in tobacco for that to stand.

I agree, it has to be overturned. One single claimant getting awarded nearly 14 BILLION pounds is utterly ridiculous. At those sums it wouldn't take too many claims before a company would be insolvent, and with the claims culture that america has could you imagine how many would be in that queue ?!

There is a part of me that wonders if the judge who made the decision knew it would be over turned, but given the sums involved also know that the case would get a hell of a lot of publicity.

Maybe but there are thousands of people working in the business worldwide and the government in the UK gets £12.3 billion a year from tobacco products.

There are 30 million people working in the UK

That's over £400 a year each we need to pay to cover the loss of revenue

If people want to smoke let them its there decision and the consequences are no secret at the end of the day.

People have to take responsibility for their own actions IMO.

Think how much the NHS would save though once smoking was removed from a generation.

Plus add in all the lost work days from smoking related illness.

Its a no brainer that the country would be better off too eventually.

The problems from smoking have been in the public domain since the 50's and the consequences well broadcast everywhere since the 70's. Its rediculous someone getting this kind of payout.

legalise all drugs, and tax them. The goverment would be rich beyond their wildest dreams.

im in machinery sales and the amount of investment for the electronic cigarettes is huge ,im sure they will be taxed soon.

Imagine how much more efficient the workplace would be if smokers weren't popping off every hour for their smoke break. I worked in a company where the supervisor would get right up you if he caught you having a non-work related chin wag, but he spend 10 mins of every hour outside sucking on his cancer sticks.

I grew up in with my Dad smoking in the house, in the car. First year away from home and I couldn't believe how I'd put up with it. Last time I visited Dad back in NZ I had my daughter with me, I ended up only staying one night because I refused to have her in that environment. He smoked outside while we were there, but the house still sunk.

Both my father and father in law were accused by doctors of smoking in their last years when they were struggling with illness.

Neither of them did but both were victims of passive smoking both in the workplace and at home.
