Another 'New Car Day' Thread

Post by Spudda »

My turn (y)

I've always had Mondeo's / Vectras and the my last company car was a Citroen Picasso which served its purpose whilst the Spudlets were young but for the last 12months I just couldn't get rid of it soon enough

I was going for a Mazda 6 until I had a phone call 2 months ago telling me the 520d Beemers were available if I wanted one

Wanting a car big enough for the me and the Spudlets, I jumped at the chance

Do you still get battered by the taxman if you have a company car?

Depends on how muhc it pollutes the planet and how much it should cost in MRRP.

Its not necessarily the case it will cost you a fortune as long as the CO2 emissions are low.

I can do salary sacrifice at work, but the numbers didn't add up for me to make it worthwhile. Especially as I'd need a decent towing capacity, and therefore higher emissions it seemed. I worked out that I'd spend almost 10K and have nothing to show after 3 years.

We've got the same scheme but like you it's not worth it. The mileage limit alone means I would have to pay a small fortune each year just to commute.

I've got a company car that I don't really use much for personal millage (can't fit all the kids in) but still have to shell out shed loads of tax for. Think I've done about 200 personal miles in it since the 1st April. So that's about 3 quid a chuffing mile!

No I have to pay them 14p a mile on top of the tax, which I hadn't factored in above, so it's £3.14 per mile (lol)

Company cars are only really a benefit if it's your only car and then only just

Nice wheels though Spud, suppose that's the real benefit. You get a new car every 3 years

Or you do a lot of Company miles. Which is the way it should be really.

The number of company miles I do don't benefit me in any way. The problem is like most things it's one size fits all.

I could get around the tax if I left the car at the office, but that would mean an extra 3 hours a day, more miles and more emissions.

Really we should be taxed only on the number of personal miles we do in company cars as that's the real benefit in kind.
