70 years ago we prepared for the largest military operation and the liberation of Europe. Countless men gave up their lives, countless women and children lost theirs.

We will never understand what those people went through as they jumped out of their boats or aircraft . All we can do is thank them.

My Grandad was there D-day + 8 as an ambulance driver. I've always regretted not asking him to tell me more about it but always got the impression that it was very difficult to talk about it so never pushed him.

Plus at the time I had bigger things to worry about like my fraperchino not being served at the correct temperature!

My gramp was a POW and my Nan had the dreaded telegram " Missing in action ,presumed dead"

He came home but never ever spoke about anything.

The 75yr old fella that came in to sweep the workshop and make the tea at a place I used to work at was a D day +0 Para, he was a lovely guy but twatted a 22yr old that hid his cup one day. A different breed.

My Dads cousin was a Captain in the R.A landing on +2, in the 45yrs I knew him he mentioned it once, very briefly, I think they just wanted to come home and put it all in a box and leave it there.

Yeah that's the feeling I got with my Granddad. He ended the war driving a Bulldozer at Belson, can't imagine how that would have effected me.

A lot of Allied troops forced captured german troops or locals to clear up the mess in the concentration camps.

You can't imagine what it was like to discover one of those places.

The stench was horrendous from what i have read which is why the allied troops refused to believe that the locals knew nothing of what happened there as many of them claimed.

Everyone knew about it, even the Allies for most of the war. We were sending ships back loaded with escaping Jews, knowing exactly where they were going.

Are children still learning about what happened in schools? as I think it should be an important part of the school curriculum for many years.

Too many youngsters take what they have for granted including my own

They do still teach them in schools. This year my daugher is doing both World Wars.

I don't think my daughter's teacher liked me telling my little girl that WW1 was all to do with oil and shipping power and nothing to do with an assasination.

They endured far more than any of us can conceive.
They certainly endured far more than the next generation would be prepared to I suspect.

For all that we are taught about it. I just wish that the world had learned from it.
