Donington Road only - 24th April

Post by Kwacky »

No limits track day.

I've got a credit note I have to use within 12 months so I've booked this. I guess I'll have to do it on the SX :(

Which group are you in? Am I right in thinking it goes as high as Inters?

Yep, it's mostly geared up for new riders so first group is for track day virgins, then novices, then inters. I'm in inters I think. They've simply repeated the last order.

I can be moved on the day if I'm in the wrong group.

I really wish I could... Barring a lottery win it's unlikely to happen in the near future :(

Sell some kids. :D

When Monty wants a new bike he produces a few more and sells a few on.

Sell both bikes and use the combined funds to buy something else if you fancy a change nutz

Neither bike is worth anything any more, I'd probably have to pay a dealer to part-ex them

The one that meant for the track. Good opportunity to get the suspension set up as well.

That's my thinking on both counts. It'll be good to give the ST a proper airing.

Grey and damp. Did the sighting laps and came in as it was raining. Frankie is in another group. He is on his second session.

Sadly no photos. I was hoping Jack might swing by but I didn't hear from him.

I left home at my usual time and noticed it was raining. Only light but it was there.

Then half a mile down the road I remembered that my bag was still on the table. Back home I go.

It's a dull ride up to Donny apart from the last few miles. I thought I would need some petrol as it's 50 miles, but in 6th and 70mph it sips lightly. I get to the circuit and find that Frankie has already camped in a garage.

Sign in was quick and easy. Frankie told me he was in inters, which is what I thought I was in, but as this was a road day inters is fast and I was in middle group, the one above novices. Oh well. As it's not limits the second group will go out first. Apart from today, because the inters our out first. Confused? Join the club.

That rain is still there. Frankie goes out and half way though his session the ambulance is called for

I go out and it's still raining. Donny is slippery in the wet, it's a new bike and these tyres aren't giving me any confidence. I'm just about to complete the first sighting lap and teh bloke in front decides that Goddards looks like a great place to throw a bike on the floor. Fecking great.

After the 3 sighting laps discretion wins over valor and I peel off to the dry garage.

Thankfully the weather improves and session 2 is much better. I manage to get a full 20 minutes in and the bike is doing a decent job. I actually find myself passing a few which surprised me as the bike doesn't feel like it's going that fast.

Session 3 was good. Really good. I love the far side of Donny and too many people are overly cautious around the old hairpin. The Triple flies out of Craner and being really light means that it's a piddle of pee to shift up early, pin the throttle open, laugh like a loon through Schwantz and carry far too much speed through McLeans. If I was getting it right at Coppice then 5th gear was needed down the back straight.

I still don't like Redgate and I've no love for the loop. If I could get my around them then I could do a decent lap.

Session 4 was after lunch so I decided to take it easy. The tyres were cold, I was cold, I had a belly full of food. I'm one of the last out. I settle in behind a really nice zx7r. He's doing a decent pace so that suit me.

Hang on, what's that up front? It's a group of about 12 riders, about a quarter of the circuit in front.

Kwacky, remain in formation and protect the bombers
But sir, there's a squadron of 109s just ahead and they've not seen me
Remain in formation Kwacky, we all need to get home in one piece.
But sir, I can take half of them out on my first pass.
Kwacky, that's an order.
Sorry sir, radio issues, I'll see you back at base.

The Triple peels off, leaving the zx7r he should have been escorting and starts to hunt the unsuspecting pack. Flight Lieutenant Kwacky knows he could end up in hot water back at base if he fails to bring his new craft home in one piece, but the thrill of the chase is far too tempting for our dashing young pilot. The hunt is on. First up is an old Gixxer, a couple of rounds are fired and down it goes, then the Street RX. On paper a slightly better aircraft but it's no match for our hero as he makes light work, peeling away from his last victim and taking out an R6 and a Daytona 675 as he flashes by. Trouble up ahead as a 1198 and another R6 are engaged in their own dogfight. An unsuspecting Fazer Thou becomes an unwitting pawn as the 3 tumble through the skies vying for position. Our gallant hero has the upper hand as he sneaks in on the starboard but the villainous 1198 spots our champions ploy and blocks him. A ZX6r tries to claim some of the glory but can't keep pace with this epic ballet being played out. The 1198 and the R6 start to pull away but Officer Kwacky has seen this before and knows what lays ahead. Our forgetful duo think they need to pull out much sooner from the speeding dive their in and they hit the air brakes far too soon. Kwacky splits them in two, does a victory roll and dashes off for more glory.

Session 5 was fantastic. Me and the bike just clicked. It was one of those sessions you don't want to end.

As it my usual practice I skipped the last session of the day. Back home, after weaving through 5 miles of stationary traffic on the M42 and a just reward of a cuppa and a hot cross bun.
