No more diesel or petrol engines made in 10 years time?

Post by duke63 »

Boris planning to bring the ban of sales of new petrol and diesel engined cars forward to 2030.

I wonder at what point in the next ten years buying a new petrol or diesel engined car becomes a complete waste of your money?

I know every business vehicle my clients look at, they always consider electric first now. they might not always go down that route due to the cost differences but it wont be long before there is no cost difference IMHO.

I know also that one of my client's customers is spending big working on an electric dustcart. The only limitations on it are now the battery span.

For local delivery vehicles, dustcarts, buses, etc... this should have been a way to go for sometime..... However from my point of view, and the miles I travel (sorry traveled lol :( ) Until there is less cost on the initial outlay it is still too high and the amount of time/miles before having to stop and charge up is too long. If these boxes were ticked I would not have a problem with an electric motor for work.

Saying all that by the time it is the norm, I may well be in one away lmao.....

I am doing work with most of the automotive battery companies ,they are pumping money into battery development like you wouldn’t believe
It’s going to happen ,hang onto your Ducati :)

More electric cars will mean bikes like my Ducati will become an expensive ornament.

Less petrol stations will have a big impact on the viability of petrol engined vehicles that carry small fuel loads.

Petrol stations won't disappear. They'll become joint petrol and electric stations

In ten years battery tech will be way beyond what it is now. Plus charging will be better, so a good timescale.

The issue as Duke identifies is what happens to transport and bikes that need fossil fuels. Running them will get more and more expensive sadly.

I cant see me buying a new vehicle other than electric now - its the future.

I would suggest buying a new petrol car after 2023 will be a waste of money.

Come bloody super market......with one person on the check out and people doing their weekly shop !

On the point about development in the battery power, there are moves within the garages and dealerships to get themselves ready for the volume.
The issues associated with high voltages and the fume build up with batteries and charging areas requires specialist ventilation among other things.

All of which will add a lot of overheads to prepare.

And we'll have to decide what to do about our bikes. Because the value of second hand bikes will plummet at some point.

where is all this electricity generated ?
we need massive investment in power generation or nobody will be using electric vehicles .

Fwiw I suspect they will actually. The only reason they exist is because that is the distribution point for fossil fuels. There is already well developed infrastructure for electricity distribution, that just needs slight adjustment.

Other way round instead.? -Everywhere a vehicle is parked will eventually become a recharge point presumably. So when you park up at the supermarket, you will also be charging your vehicle.

(wait) Milk-floats.? ;)
All buses (large mass/floorpan for battery location, container ships (diesel shipping consumption is a huge percentage) etc.. should really be mandated first imho. The outlays are large anyway, (so the owners will inherently be in a strong position to cope with increased capital investment) and the impact could therefore perhaps also be greatest ?

I think people are looking too much at vehicles being recharged every time they need electricity.

The way forward is swappable batteries. Go to a petrol station (as was) swap your low battery for a full one and away you go. You can still recharge your car when you want to but people will want the option to get instant power.

I think also most people forget how little miles they actually do in their cars.

I appreciate some people do need to cover big miles in a day but i suspect the majority of cars do less than 200 miles per week. That is one charge a week in some/many E cars now. Easily done at home. They will all do that in three years time.

The two of my clients who have them, love their E cars and they are at the two extremes - One has two Teslas, the other a Renault Zoe.

There you go, even less than that.

142 miles per week is the average.

I don't think we'll switch from oil-powered, to electric-powered vehicles until we have to....at least not to a meaningful degree.
Which means we still have around 50 years worth of known reserves to plough through first.

You know that oil is needed for more than just fuel, right?
One of the oil giants biggest lies is that most plastic is recyclable, only around 9% of it is at the moment but they just slap the recycling logo on most of it so that we keep buying it.

Look at Norway, they have installed a big network of public charging stations and offered incentives along side the taxes on fossil cars it was reported a few years ago that a Tesla was only marginally more than a Ford Mondeo for a Norwegen buyer.
"September 2020 was a record month for passenger plug-in electric cars in Norway, as the market share for the very first time exceeded 80%! The total share was 81.6%, including 61.5% (also a record) for all-electric cars, and an additional 20.1% for plug-in hybrids."

Have a look at this. The future for the one issue so many say will hold back electric vehicles. And probably the death of petrol stations.

That's really interesting, and very nicely thought out.

As with a lot of industries you can see this kick starting the competition and getting more major service stations built and converted to this style.

There's a Shell TV advert where they show you a petrol station in the process of being transformed into an electric recharge station.
