Speeding charges dropped against 4 bikers

I think the original video for this was shown on here when they were convicted on speeds over 140mph.

Seems the police may not have been telling the truth. (wasntme)

Single Justice Procedure not heard of that before.

Sounds like a way of saving money without proper due dilligence.

Ah, the joys of trying to cut costs when it comes to dealing with justice and peoples lives.

Is briefly doing 140 mph in appropriate conditions, on a well maintained machine, by a skilled rider truly that dangerous ?

Genuine question. What are people's thoughts ?

It is if you get caught ;)

Blade - honestly i dont see a problem, as long as its not busy etc, a brief blip to hit that speed then back down, but thats my idea, i wouldnt do it just due to the fact of i wouldnt want to get caught and the fwct that im not taught to ride like that but if it was allowed and got taught to eg autobarn then why not as long as you feel confident in doing it

Obviously 140mph is always dangerous, any unforeseen incident that caused a dismount at those speeds is likely to cause you damage -isn't it.
.... But then the same dismount at 70mph is also likely to cause you damage.
Surly any motorcycling "in appropriate conditions, on a well maintained machine, by a skilled rider" is inherently dangerous anyway. An increased speed simply increases that risk & the likely consequences.

If your question was " Do you feel that briefly doing 140 mph in appropriate conditions, on a well maintained machine, by a skilled rider can be acceptable ? " Then my answer would have to be an emphatic "Yes", especially because I frequently do. *

* Trackdays only, obviously. (angel)

Speeds a number, nothing more imo, simple as that and can't be looked at in isolation to establish risk and danger accurately. It's a combination of speed and inappropriate circumstances that can and does become dangerous.

We've all done well over 500 mph in appropriate conditions on a well maintained machine with a competent person in charge and not raised an eyebrow as its perfectly acceptable to us all in the right conditions.

Taken on its own, speed is just a number measuring velocity.

I think the question is too ambiguous, too loaded - and believe me, I'm on your side...to an extent.

If I was a traffic cop & I saw you doing a speed like that...I don't know whether you're a good rider or not....either way I'd have to pull you over....I'd be obligated to act, if only to protect you from yourself....never mind anyone else.

Another thing would be doing 100mph+...that's crossing a mental threshold for anyone..."hitting triple digits", "doing a ton-up" etc......works the same way for the cop who's paid to stop you.

OR....look at it this way....you're a very skilled rider, doing 150mph or so, and another rider...perhaps not so skilled, is heading towards you...also at 150mph.

And he fcuks up....

500 mph???

Doing 140mph per se in the right place isn't dangerous but when the speed limit is 70mph other road users have a right to expect that someone will not be doing 140mph anywhere around them.

This makes for interesting reading. Look how stopping distance increases exponentially but thinking distance doesn't. even if the stopping distance was double 70mph distance of 315 feet, which it wont be,then its still over a tenth of a mile.

Playing devils advocate D thats all (y) its hypothetical after all.

I accept the question is loaded but wanted to hear opinions.

500mph ?? A plane. Given space and time with a skilled pilot and well maintained machine the danger is minimal.

Totally agree with Duke about other road users expectations though.

However playing devils advocate (devil)

It's a straight road with no junctions or access points. Visibility is perfect and you can see 1 mile therefore see other road users and abandon the high speed run if needed. You've ridden the road and the tarmac is clear and in good condition with no obstacles. The machines has just been checked as perfect condition and the rider is competent and experienced in the task to be completed.

Same question..is 140 mph for a brief roll on and off dangerous? Not is it acceptable but is it truly dangerous ?

Ah well....

"Hypothetically speaking"....If a cop were say, to pull over a hypothetical guy on a Triumph for doing 55 in a 35, he might say something like....."I know what speeds you guys are getting up to back there on the straightaway (150-ish), and I stay off it for several reasons.....there's no-one else up there, you guys know what you're doing, and at some point, I'm going to start causing accidents when people are panic-braking, instead of preventing them. So I stay down here....it's better all round that way".....and then "Plus, I can see at least three equipment violations from here, so either way, you're fcuked".

That was not a very good day. B@$tard.

140 will kill at least one person if anything happens. If you're involved with anyone else then they're dead as well /

Seems a bit selfish to me.

How many aircraft collide mid air?

How many vehicles collide on the road?

That's why you can't compare the two.

175,000 people were injured on our roads last year. That suggests they're rarely empty.

But thats because most of the population live in densely populated areas and drive at the same time.

I had most of mid Wales to myself yesterday (lol)

Sadly I've dealt with too many fatal crashes where people thought it was safe to race because it was the middle of the night and the roads were empty.

The case I'm dealing with at the moment has 7 kids under the age of 10 all being told that their mum/dad is dead and they've got go grow up without them. Only one person was speeding. 3 dead and 1 person left with life changing brain damage. The guy responsible walked away.

I'm not saying don't do it, because we've all done it.

But never try to condone it to me. I've seen photos, read statements and heard live evidence that'll stay with me for the rest of my life. I've lost too many nights sleep and shed too may tears with the cases I've had to work with, and I'm just a lawyer with no other involvement in the matter.
