Post by Scuff »

I've got an Alpinestars jacket that I want to clean and re-condition .... Anybody got any recommendations as to what products best to use these days ?

Depends how dirty they are. If they've not been cleaned for a while it might be easier and cheaper to send them off.

Don't know, but...
... when I went to the Bikeshow a few years ago there was a company there who were promoting a leather reconditioning balm. They had a team of (very (inlove) lovely) young ladies who were going round massaging the product into the leathers of anyone who went near them.
I was wearing my old Wolf jacket & one of them started working it into my right shoulder (whew)
However Deany was with me that year, and brought a swift stop to her endeavours. (doh)
I remember seeing a bloke in a one piece being massaged by four of the little beauties, & judging by the look on his face he was well on the way to a happy ending.!
They were selling loads of it too, because it genuinely seemed to spruce up the material that it was applied to. Anyway, I didn't invest & I don't recall what make it was.

Edit. I have just checked my old jacket, and you can still tell where the cream was applied.

That is a brilliant sales technique, if you see them again, maybe suggest they diverse to Australia? (lol)

Knikwax leather cleaner is the best.

Agreed with duke, nikwax leather cleaner and then the conditioner stuff is good. However a bottle only lasts about 1.5 times and 2 at a stretch for a 1 piece.

Someone once suggested to me to use the same stuff they use on horse saddles... Does exactly the same job, and it's much cheaper.

Use a cleaner before applying a good conditioner. If you just use a conditioner any dirt or micrscopic grit trapped in the leather pours works with the oils in the conditioner as an abrasive paste and makes the leather all shiny.

Besides, they look like they'd chaff somewhat, although perhaps not with the sort of riding they'll get used for. (smirk)
