Green laning

For those that go green laning I was wondering if you could give me a few pointers? I assume I need a road legal, taxed and insured bike? Suggestions around the £3k mark appreciated. How do you then go about finding routes etc? Thanks in advance!

Hiya mate

There are probably some guru on here part of the TRF or similar. But anyway yes a fully road legal bike.

Only ride on byways.. represented by red/pink plus signs on the ordnance survey maps. Even then you'd need to check online see if they have since become restricted.. Is bloody nightmare but once you find a few you'll have a a blast.. I spent last summer green laning on the tiger 800xc. Awesome. Had to stick knobbies on and accept the bike is gonna go down at some point.

Also I have come across self made no access to motorcycle road signs.. very good copies. Farmers stick up to stop us using them. But you need to be sure as plod can seize your bike and give you a fine if your riding where your shouldn't be.. So I am told.. never experience that but. In any case as long as your polite to locals and for walkers or horse riders. Generally they're ok.. But you will find the odd chap wanting to have a go.. thinking they own the world.

Anyway good luck

What sort of bike are you thinking of Andy? An Enduro or more of an adventure bike?

What off roading experience do you have ? .... Are you thinking of green laning only or do you fancy taking it a bit further and trying some enduro' s or off road practice tracks ?

3k will get you a reasonable bike ... Have you allowed for the clothing, helmet, boots etc. you'll need in that budget ?

Also will you be having to ride far or taking in a van or trailer.. it was a ball ache for my mate on his Honda CRF 450.. riding 35+ miles to some nice tracks and same to go home. And a ball ache for everyone else on ADV bikes slowing up for him.

This stuff is fine on an ADV.. see few pics. Of some green lanes.. Although the word lanes is far from it.. they are not all duty trails bear in mind

Fwiw I love my little old MTX200 for playing about. Road legal ( & road useable, not always the same thing) light enough to pick up when you crash, which you will.
I also love taking the MTX out when the lanes round here are snow covered. Pretty much only me & Tractors are about then :)
The lads who I used to go playing in the quarries with have all retired from motorcycles these days, but my baby brother still does loads of green laneing with his mates. Loads of trails for him too, up in the mountains outside Barcelona where he lives.

Some times you get to ride in the valleys

Sometimes you get to ride through the winter

And sometimes you get to ride above the clouds

I love trail riding (what we call it down here) did a good 10 yrs of it. In NZ it’s easy, lots of National Parks and no rego needed as long as your not on public roads. Did about 3 yrs worth in Aussie as well during my military posting in the late 90’s. Had a Xt250, it250, it465, kdx200 and ended with a Husaberg FX400.

Have considered getting back into but I’d be going out by myself and it’s pretty rocky and isolated where I’d be riding so I’ve decided against it.

Frankie, I’d snap that Sherco up if we were in the same country!!!

Do you still have your bike for sale Frankie?

I'm toying with getting an enduro to play on in the fields and 'very' quiet lanes where I live. Thinking about 250/450cc. Probably got up to 2.5k to spend on it as it will sit in the garage with my road bike. It has to be road legal. I'm looking at Honda, Yam, Husq, KTM but what are Gasgas and Sherco like?

It is mate, however I have been mega busy before Christmas, and was not around a lot at home to sort out the pics and stuff for Daytonandy.
So at the moment he is in the driving seat when I actually get my act together and sort the pics out. Should have done today, was having too much fun on my other bike lol.

Just fitted a new Battery to it, started first time, awesome... does need MOT, last time I took it out was last Dec for an MOT (giggle) (facepalm)
Would be in your price range (max) but obviously Daytonandy has first dibs at present. It is an awesome machine, and not for the faint (h) ed.. I will get the MOT sorted anyway when she goes, it flew through apart from a refelector needed to be stuck on 8)

Sherco are little known compared to the big names, however I see it coming up a lot recently, people talking about them.. In Oz they are pretty popular with the enduro racers, Spain obviously. Well know for Trail bikes as are Gas Gas,

Away alot this week, so I will get some pics taken over the weekend.
