Liquid gasket sealant

Anyone got any tips on doing this? I have some to refit the alternator cover to the crankcase on the 748. Want to do it this weekend but can imagine a right mess being made everywhere if i'm not careful.

I'm guessing its better to apply to the crankcase rather than the cover i'm trying to refit.

Make sure both surfaces are oil free prior to applying the sealant - give them a rub over with brake cleaner or similar (but not petrol).
Yes, apply it to the crankcase not the cover.
You'll only need a thin coating, try and keep any excess on the outside or it can block oilways etc inside the engine if it breaks off and ends up floating around internally.
Don't over torque it to start with, it's better to nip it up, let it set then finish the tightening after the sealants "curing" period.
That's all I can think of at the moment, hth.

Cheers mate. Sounds like good advice. Its complicated a bit by having to ensure the water pump impeller is fitted to its drive correctly. Tried a few times dry to make sure i have a decent chance getting it right first time.

Nothing more to add.

Deegee should be a technical author (y)

Don't laugh, but that's what my Dad did for a living.

I don't use liquid gasket sealant for the reason Deegee states.

I changed to loctite 518 which only sets in an air tight location..... bit more expensive but worth it in the long run .

Crankcase cover now refitted. Just need to get a new oil filter and refill the oil and coolant and then see how it goes.

Its certainly a good first test - at least you have an offer of help from JHP if it doesn't.
