Well as I'm sure we have read or heard about the new imposed speeding fines. England and Wales.
The more money you earn the more you pay, is this a fair approach to road safety, or a circumstance of you've got money, you can pay for the people who can't.
I could explain why this is unfair, but lets see your thoughts.

I obey the limits at all times so it's not a problem for me.

I think it's a very fair approach, and it already exists in one form or another in many, if not most circumstances of law, the old adage being..."Let the punishment fit the crime".


Two quick arbitrary examples of what is proposed.......Trevor, 23 years old, gets busted for doing 45mph in a 30 zone on his scooter......200 quid fine (or whatever)....Trevor is defo gonna think twice before he speeds again, or he'll lose his job delivering pizza, or whatever it is that Trevor does. Spotty moron.

Then.....Bryce Jr. III, 35 years old, married to a super-model, with $10 bajillion in the bank and a yacht in the Cayman Islands, gets hit with the same charge....He's going to 'LOLZ' at a 200 quid fine and basically not give a flying fcuk unless you hit him where it hurts, and with something that EVERYONE can understand.....money, and lots of it - his own, in this case.


I think the "you can pay for people who can't" point has no relevance/validity.....it's the equivalent of being punished for an offence that someone else committed and could potentially set a poor precedent.....I could throw "threat of consequences" or something else out there, but rational/independent thought in people seems rare these days, my iPhone just told me so.

Think it's fair but id prefer to have less time effort and money spent on speeding motorists most aren't going to harm anyone

Sadly Rossgo the stats say otherwise. Speeding is a massive cause of crashes on the road.

Speeding's fine, it's the stopping that kills you!

I cant help but feel these new fines will do nothing but piss people off and induce unsafedriving - slow but unsafe.

Speed varying by 1mph is inevitable, varying by 3mph is still fairly likely. They are effectively requiring people to stare at their speedo which is inherently unsafe. I would feel much safer on and around the road with speeding motorists so long as they paid attention to the road and were alert; ready to hit the brakes or divert their course to avoid an accident.

I can't afford to pay even the lightest fine but it worries me despite being a careful driver.

They're not requiring people to do anything other than drive to the standards of the driving test they passed to earn their licence....to maintain and practice skills they already possess.

No one maintains a constant speed.. most people probably drive +/- 2mph of their chosen speed. That could land you a fine of 50% of your weekly income.

It happened to me yesterday, there were lots of pedestrians, cars pulling out etc which took most of my attention. I consciously kept my foot at a constant position then when I glanced at my speedo 100m+ later I was doing 5 over the limit - because I was concentrating on the more vulnerable people around me. That is 100% safer than someone who keeps constant speed but doesn't pay attention to the road.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but perhaps these harsher penalties are in place to make people more willing to accept autonomous vehicles?

Yep happens to me all the time and personally I think it's safer to do that then to constantly watch the Speedo mate
