Daytona 955 advice please.

Post by StMarks »

One of our 675.cc lads has asked a question, and I wondered if there may be some knowledge on here that would be useful for him please.?
Jabe wrote:Hey all,

After being taken out at Snetterton and having to rebuild my stripleR (still ongoing), it looks like I shall have to sell it at the end to recoup monies as it is clearing me out.

So started looking at cheaper bikes to buy while I save the ole pennies up again and been looking at the daytona 955. seams to get good reviews and I know it is no sports bike by comparison to the current offerings from other manufacturers, but at over 140BHP for the post 2001 models and stacks of torque from the triple engine, sounds a good bet. I am thinking i could get one to ride initially on the road and turn into a cheap track bike for next year as they seam to handle reasonably well. Also if I get taken out again on track at least it would be a bike that did not owe me much unlike my £5k stripleR (pre track day value).

At the end of the day my budget will dictate what i am able to buy and these go for nicely under £2k which is useful for my much depleted budget.

Does anyone have any experience with these, pros, cons etc, things to look out for, steer clear off?

I had a 955 Sprint RS, which was the same engine but detuned.

Starter sprag clutch are a known issue. They can suffer from electrical gremlins. Otherwise a very good bike. Try and get one of the newer ones as they have the more tuned engine

Hi Stmarks, yes I have a 955I and I love it. Unfortunately the bike is better than my ability or bottle! It will pull from about 35mph in top gear and just keeps going and the fastest I have been is 133mph (Snetterton track day) but my brother who is a lot quicker than me did 143mph and it was still accelerating!
The ride is what I call firm but you can tell that it's a British bike built for British roads. Nothing seems to upset it (potholes, white lines Tec.) I did f**k up on the track by dropping into 1st gear by mistake (instead of 3rd) but apart from some tail wagging and rear wheel under rotation it never seemed unstable or scary.

I doubt that you would be disappointed if you bought one but go for the youngest you can get..

They stopped production in 2006 but mine is an 07 reg so must be one of the last built

Regards

I had an '02 955i - the one with the HUGE single headlight and twin sided swing arm - the bastard of the bunch!! It was sold at the same time as the Anniversary edition that was released in British racing green with carbon bits, a single sided swing arm and in limited quantities but obviously more expensive.
I did almost 40,000km in 4 and a bit years without any problems, however my mechanic (a Triumph specialist) advised me to update it or risk being hit with the possibility of the electrical gremlins striking.

If you're handy with a spanner, you should be able to sort these gremlins before things go south, as they're the same common problem with most of the Triumph range (until now) - the regulator rectifier fries which then in turn cooks your stator and your battery. The 675 had the same issue which was replaced under recall with a MOSFET reg-rec and new mini harness to tie it in. For the 955, you could probably buy one from a wreckers and retrofit it yourself.

Going from the 955i to the 675 was like night and day. I loved the 955 - power, torque, neutral handling - but the 675 had all that and more as it was lighter with a shorter wheel base, so it dropped into corners effortlessly (in comparison) and the reduced weight made it easier to brake and accelerate. I'm 100kg and 6' tall, so probably look a little gangly on the 675, however I still find enough room and a set of aftermarket rearsets can make it even more comfortable.

Surely you could find a first gen 675, either Daytona OR Street Triple for reasonable money. They would be a far better track bike than the 955. Obviously, if you got an early Street, you'll need to add the Daytona brakes package but other than that, it wouldn't need much.
