In that case i would use stainless and grease the threads, stainless can cold weld and gall the threads without some lube in there.

I know you are Kwacky anyways, but totally agree with the above. Especially with your weather conditions I’d be worried about galvanic corrosion using aluminium on steel. Plus aluminium work hardens very easily (becomes brittle from repeated cyclic stresses/vibration). No real advantage to using the aluminium nuts but plenty of potential issues.

got the nuts off. It looks like the helicoils failed or where failing

Ok im shocked, i never realised it would be different torque settings either. All of this is an eye opener. Shame its happened but well done for checking, makes me wonder how many incidents have happened before this without the proper inspections?
