Server Upgrade

Postby D6Nutz » 13 Aug 2018, 10:49

Hi All.

I need to perform some maintenance on the site, including moving over to a new server.

The server I currently have is a few years old now and the operating system is now end-of-life so not getting any security fixes, etc. Once the transfer is complete I also plan to support https on the site.

Most of the work will be done in the background, however there will be a few hours when I need to shut the site down to transfer over to the new server.

I'll post here when I have more accurate timescales, but it will be happening in the next 2 weeks.

Cheers, D6Nutz aka Server Gremlin aka Jon.

*** UPDATE ***

The site will be going dark between 18:00 and 19:00 tonight (16/08) GMT.

During this time I will be copying the site and database to the new server. If you try and access the site you will see a "Site unavailable due to maintenance" page. We have to update the DNS entry to point to the new server, and depending on how the magic of the interwebs works for you this could take anywhere from instant to 24 hours to get updated. You may try force refreshing your browser with CTRL+F5.

OK, so the planned switch didn't happen overnight as expected. Due to a technical issue with the DNS provider things just haven't moved as expected.

We're still on the old server, but will be back open for business. At some point the switch will happen and I'll backup the database again and copy it over.

If I could please ask a favour. Please don't upload any photos to the site until we have switched. The photos folder on the server is about 4.5GB and takes an age to backup and copy over.

Watch this space for further updates.

No worries. One or two files I can find and copy.

And we're back.

I found a spare hour, and with some remote server admin foo got the database transferred over.

As always there are some outstanding tasks to complete, but I'll get those done. The only thing of note is, there will be not email notifications for a day or two..
