Brakes binding

Post by D6Nutz »

Since the last ride out to stow I've not had the chance to ride or clean the bike. I've had brakes bind before but never this bad, I really struggled to move it.

Apart from being dirty is there anything more serious I should look into?

I'm also a little concerned on the disks, see pic. I'm going to email the company that made them for their advise.

Looks like the discs are pitted where the pads stuck to them.

What Kwacky said. Have you tired rubbing down with emery ?

Not trying to be clever or anything but my advice would be in the future if you are short of time after a ride to clean the bike when covered in crud and salt just rinse it down for a few minutes with a hose to wash the salt off. Genuinely not being clever just trying to help. Hope you get it sorted. I would strip and service the calipers if it was my bike as you need to have relaiblr brakes you can depend on and trust.

Nah, thats sound advice mate.. My excuses are, it was going to get dark soon, it was fecking freezing, and my fingers where purple and painful from the ride back.... Not ideal bike cleaning weather..

I'm planning on getting the bike valeted soon, which will involve a through clean of every part of the bike including the calipers. When I get back from that I'll strip them down for a full clean.

A question. How far should the pads retract from the discs normally ??? The pads on the rsv seem to release far enough so as not to cause further breaking, however the do seem to still be touching the discs slightly.

If they aren't pulling back properly you need new piston seals

It is incredibly rare for me to wash my bike in the winter.

I think Perkles is right about the seals.

Is that easy to do? Sort of like pop the piston out, clean it up, replace a seal, and pop it back in. Or is there more to it than that??

Easy job but a bit time consuming, you will need new brake fluid and need to bleed the system again.
seals are designed to pull the piston back into the caliper

Spray the pads and calipers in brake cleaner and see if that works first.

If the brakes are Brembo, its not easy to get new seals for them as Brembo wont supply them. I had heard though that you can get them from Wemoto.

Not so with triumph brembo bits. Seals and pistons available separately.

I couldnt get seals for a Brembo master cylinder. As Duke says Brembo wont suuply. I would just go direct to wemoto.

The pre-radial Brembos are particularly difficult to find.

If you can find a KTM with the same Brembo brakes, at one time KTM dealers could source them.

Mine are the pre-radials obviously (facepalm)

I might give Griff a call and see if he has any in stock.

On another note, I emailed the company that made the discs (blackshadow UK) and despite being on holiday replied to me with a very detailed couple of emails explaining not to worry about the discs and some advise on how to recover the discs.

Very interested in how you can save the discs. Also I am I retested in having a couple question answered if at all possible. How do discs become pitted? If/when they are is it serious problem? I mean when would you need to cha he them? Will pitting become worse?

Sorry if I'm hijacking thread but interested as a few months back my bikes brakes bonded too but have been fine ever since with no issues at all after
