Quick Action Throttle - 2008 R1

Post by Zx10dale »

..............its fast but when 1 handful is just not enough (facepalm) . I need a QA throttle for the above. Did some searching on Ebay as usual, (gah) the prices for kit is unbelievable, typically £60 min to £ 120 + .Not paying that !.So checked out R1 site to see other options and came across a couple of "DIY fixes" all seemed very manageable , one was a modification of a GSXR modification kit (nothing more than a larger radius plastic ring) Anyone got any experience of DIY mods etc or know of cheaper mod kits ?????

Don't know any specific to the R1 but the Daytona throttle is interchangeable with the speed triple. It basically is just a larger cam so a thin strip of plastic glued on would work if you can get to the cam?

Those plastic rings with a larger radius work. If you know the diameter check if the Suzuki one would be interchangeable there is a good chance they will be the same on most map bikes.

I bought a rizoma grip set, it comes with 2 throttle cams. One is normal, the other is around 1/5th. Not quite 1/4 but does the job brilliantly, and only around £50 including the new grips which are proper nice.

Brilliant mod. Takes a bit of getting used to, especially roundabouts and hairpins LOL, but no more bending wrists back...just a slight turn and your full open.

Done some moor digging on this topic and found out that an r6 throttle tube from post 06 R6 will fit the standard cables and give a much quicker response than the std R1 version. Will do a bit more digging but I think it will get you down to a 1/4 turn. Will let you know what I find !!

Dale just be careful you don't go too far! The less throttle travel you have, the harder it can be to modulate small amounts of throttle eg corner entry or mid corner before you want the throttle wide open. This can make it quite snatchy.

It's a valid point Andy, but to keep having to take 2 handful for FOT is a pain. I am just scaling the rotation down to suit my particular style. I'll let you know how it pans out.

I think most aftermarket ones come with a variety of cams allowing you to tailor it but not really read into them. I switched to a speed triple throttle on my Daytona which is only a slightly larger cam but even that took a little getting used to but definitely worth it. I can reach wot without adjusting grip which does make riding easier. Good luck!

Well for 1 I am not prepared to pay £70 to £120 for this kit, that is just nuts. There is always an alternative solution, especially on something so technically simple. Anyway your throttle must be good as I had a f**k of a job keeping up with you last year !!!
