Cross threaded engine bolt :(

Post by C00kiemonster »

I'm servicing Jane's 600rr (2005) at the moment. I've never done it before on her bike and as it doesn't do many miles (8000ish in 9 years :D ) I've not taken the fairing off for a long while.

Anyway, mid panel on right hand side needs to come off as well as the belly pan to do the service and hay presto some oaf at the only place we have ever had the bike serviced has cross threaded the engine bolt that holds the r& g crash slider on.

I've managed to turn the mid fairing on the bolt enough to get at the oil filter (once I removed the radiator reservoir) so I can service and put it back together, however it's bloody frustrating!

I guess I'm going to have to get it helicoiled at some point (not quite sure of the french on that one yet :D ) but does anyone else have any ideas?

It comes out about an inch and tightens again fine, but then just spins after an inch on the way out ;(

Bloody garages do piss me off.

I think that's a common problem. It happened to mine. I think the R and G thread isn't spot on to be honest because it also happened on the D600.

No idea what to do though.

As you have already said heli coil will be the strongest repair and should be relatively cheap

+1
If one of your local garages has a helicoil kit, it is so cheap & easy to do that some cash in the right palm will see it done in next to no time IMHO.

Time to cement some friendship with the local engineering community mate. ;)

Yup. I can't get the bolt out so it will need helicoiling at some point.

Oil service is done, so it will only be a problem if I need to strip the bike to some point.

I might take it down the lane and torch it if it needs that :D

Air filter, new brake fluid and a thorough clean when I get time now.
